project blood,sweat, and beers
« on: Aug 14, 2010, 11:14:48 PM »
FINALLY!!! Started this build last weekend and the plan is to have it done (enough) for MCR.

Lets see started with an 85 about 2 years ago beat battered smashed rolled and wheeled the piss out of it.  I moved to Riverside from Paradise Ca. about 6 months ago and bought an 89 standard cab toy about 3 months later.
When I bought the truck its had a Gen 2 Total Chaos front end with resi Kings heimed steering, deavers rear, piggy back kings fiberglass all around and super clean.
Its got a 22re 5 speed single case headers intake the usual toyota junk.
Decided I liked wheeling to much not to tear the thing apart so I began the process last weekend.

When I bought it.

BAJA'd homie

Heres when I started the straight axle last weekend

Built the cross member and finished up welding most everything today. She is sitting on her own weight and I rolled it out of the side of the yard for the first time in a month.

Top of the cross memeber.  I set the bracing just far apart enough so I can still mount my winch.

I'll be working on it all tomorrow.  Steering is next on my list I need to move the bow forward ALOT.

Did some work today.  Got the box mounted almost all the way.  Just tacking stuff together. The box is WAY far forward I extended the steering colum shaft 6 3/4 inhes.  Moved the box up as high as I could get it.  I need a flat steering arm and to build my tie rod.  I plan on tubeing the front as soon as I can get the truck to work.

My goel to to build an inner cage on the front clip exo the cab and inner cage the rear... The usual.
Im going to make the fiber glass bed sides and fenders to I can quick release them when I go out to the trail as this truck will be my daily driver till I get something else.

3/8 plate to brace the frame and the box.

I had to cut out ALOT of fender and the body mount

Got alot done last night.  Mounted steering box brakes finish welding.  The usual stuff.

Order a flat pitman arm and my 3rds today  I'm going to order up some 30 splines this week as well.  I went with 4.88's this time around since I never really had good luck with the 5.29's I think I went through a half dozen or more. Tires will be here friday.... its getting really close

I work at Demello Off-Road and am going to cage it here.  So as soon as its drivable the cage work will begin.

Also im picking up a flat pitman arm from yota masters along with spindle studs so I dont have the chance to strip out my 6 shooter knuckles.  Steering heims are on there way as well.

haha thats a good one, I'm thinkin Slit Red might have to be the name of this build.

Updates..  Sold the tires but cant get ahold of the dude with my other tires I had or thought I had lined up.
NEED RIMS anyone got some in Socal Corona/Riverside area?  Lookin for 15 by 8's with a 2.50 backspace.

Got my flat pitman arm new perches for the rear and my springs yesterday.  I need to pick up some hardware and my steering heims today.  Planning on doing some work when I get off.

so what is holding up the body now, since the front left mount is gone?

There 3/4 heims with a 5/8 mis alignment spacers.  I got them from Eric at Yota masters, we do alot of work with them great dudes no doubt.
Im drilling out the pitman arm out to 5/8s for the heims, and the 6 shooters are allready drilled for 5/8 bolts as well so building the drag link should be quick and easy.  I believe eye to eye its 31 inches on the dot.
