Strange noises
« on: Aug 20, 2009, 12:52:23 AM »
Alright so there have been some strange almost grinding like noises coming from my drive train somewhere. It is only there while in low RPMs on acceleration and while using the engine to slow down. After I get to above about 2800 RPMs it goes away. I cant tell what it is. It drives smooth and isn't lacking on any power. What could this be?  ???

Does it actually go away? Or just get masked by the motor?

I bvelieve it goes away it could be masked though by the sound but then its not there when at a slow coast or when sitting at a idle. Could it be the valves or something like that?

It is lifted and I am not sure if its tthe stock drivelines or not cause i bought it with the lift. I just added 1" longer shackels but if it was the driveline wouldnt it shake the truck when at higher speeds?

yeah grinding like that is something in the drive-line.  Could be a chip, could be excess play and slipping.  Fix now before it costs a lot of money.

alright if it is the driveline would I be able to see any physical damage being done? And I am guessing it would have to be the rear drveshaft since I am running IFS as of now

Alright it soinds like I will have to pull it apart then. If its that it might explain a few other issues that have been going on. Hopefully thats it cause I just put a 4.7 t-case in it and I hope the noise isnt comming from there

You can always take out your rear driveline and drive it in 4wd. If there is no noise its prob the rear driveline

Yea just took it apart and the splines are fine and there is plenty of grease in there but I will put more. It lookes like it is too steep of an angle for the u-joint at the axle end and it is folding on its self for the the two peices to make contact cause there are marks from rubbing on itself. I think I am just gonna have to get some angled shims or something like that. to fix it cause I dont really have the money for a new driveline as of right now

Yea I tried that and the noise I was hearing was gone so I am sure it was the rear driveshaft. But then when driving around in 4 hi there was grinding noise comming from the front diff when i got up to road driving speed. What could that be? Everything works fine just a horrible noise but not there when crawling or under 15?

Grinding or more like a humming noise? Mine is pretty loud in 4wd High. It was just the extra gears in the tcase because more is stuff is moving around in there when 4wd is engaged

No I know the humming sound and that wasnt it. I think might be the u joints or what ever there is in the axles for the IFS. It pops and what not when in 4 wheel drive. Is that bad or will it break soon? I am taking it through fridyce this upcomming weekend and I would likt to try to fix any worn out parts in the alredy weak IFS upfront.
