foam air filters
« on: Jun 19, 2004, 12:41:42 PM »
Okay so I'm tired of buying paper type air filters everytime I spend a weekend out in the dust.  I used to race dirt bikes and we had two stage foam filters you washed and oiled.  Does anyone know a reasonably priced foam filter that will fit my 22re?  I want to use the stock box with it's cold air inlet.  When I called the local parts places only one of them said they could get a K & N, for a whopping $55.  Any leads, links would be appreciatted. Thanks

55 is steep for a k & n for toyota but you can wash it every week if needed and it'll pay for itself in about 6-7 washes so. I found them local at kragen for $39.00 I think. I'm going back in tomorrow, I'll check

Mostly toyota fj40's, couple p/u's & my runner, oh yea a 63 chevy stepside & a EB too! 1 meeting & 1 run a month, participation depends on the time of year.

And damn, went to Kragen at lunch & 49.99 for K&N, Fram hogs $45 or so. I'll use paper for now.

Just ordered an Amsoil foam filter and oil online (amsoil.com) for $33 bucks and change - is suppossed to improve performance, clean the air better and hold more dirt before plugging, I'll let you know :sly:

You can get anything from napa if the salesman has half an IQ.  The buying power is huge so they can get whatever it is you want.  But the catch is it will probobly cost more than a mag etc.

Well I got my amsoil air filter after just a few days waiting, was curious to see if it improved performance in any noticeable way, Amsoil says it will increase performance, fuel efficency and air cleaning ability!  Well I won't know for a while cause I ordered the wrong filter.  It's odd because the filter (which looks really good) is just a half an inch to wide for my air box.  Anyways I'll let you know what happens when I get the right one.

Okay so impatience got the best of me and I decided to strip the fancy edge off the airfilter so I could put it in - it worked great.  By the way the filter is real nice, quality product!

Anyways something funny happened during the process that is worth sharing.  After we installed said filter the rig would barely start and only run above 1500 rpm.  What was the problem?  Not the filter!

We ended up taking the air routing hoses from the trhottle body back to the air box completely off.  We found that the rubber adapter that connects the metal tube to the throttle body was cracked on the bottom side.  Upon investigation it looked like the crack had been there for a while, sucking all sorts of unfiltered junk into the engine, not to mention leaning out my fuel mixture.

We put a new one on and my fluctuating idle and a couple other quirky low rpm problems that I couldn't seem to figure out are now gone - too cool.

Beware, you cannot see these cracks, or openings from the top side.  Also when you do a body lift it puts extra strain on this piece as well.

You can get annihilation from napa if the salesman has bisected an IQ. The affairs ability is huge so they can get whatever it is you want. But the bolt is it will probably amount added than a mag etc.

I used to run a foam filter on my Willys until it backfired through the carb once, almost burned down my house.
