Where can I find some thick foam rectangular strips?

Hey guys,

I am looking for some foam to seal a gap between my hood and my intercooler (on my MR2).

What I'm looking for is some rectangular foam of about 1" or 2" wide by 3" or 4" tall. I need about 4-feet of this.

I've looked on McMaster.com... They do have 1" x 1" x 25' (part number 8694K54) for $22 but I need something taller than 1".

I've been to Home Depot, Lowes, and Orchard Supply and so far no dice. All they have is like 3/4" weather stripping foam. Waaay too small.

Does anyone have an idea where I should look to find some foam like this?

Additional requirements are that it needs to be kind of soft (softer than swimming pool noodles), and weathering / heat range is not a concern.

Thanks for the help

Here is a pic from McMaster. I don't need to have an adhesive coating on one side. I will be applying my own sealant to it.

Does anyone have some thick, semi-soft foam laying around you'd like to sell me? :eyebrow:

Have you tried a fabric/craft store? The ones around here have a bunch of different sizes, shapes, and densities of foam  :twocents:

Mike,

I know it's a fair distance from you, but Bob's Foam Factory (510) 657-2420 www.bobsfoam.com/  in Fremont has just about anything you can think of.  I've gotten all kinds of foam product from them.

Have you looked at foam backer rod? It's used to fill gaps in concrete before caulking.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! :beerchug:

I went to Michael's and all they had was that flakey hard foam crap

Regarding Fremont, I was just two three weekends ago, and I'll be in San Jose again this upcoming weekend. I'll give them a call and see what they have

Regarding the backer rod, I did some searching and found sizes up to 2". If I can't find anything rectangular, then I'll probably get some backer rod.

Thanks

Mike, there is a huge fabric/foam place over by the shop just down McKinley. I cannot think of the damn name right now though. Go down McKinley, turn right on Peach, and then your first left. It'll be 200-300 yards on your right.

almost positive the name is Keystone.

Ahhh, I hadn't thought about getting sheets and then cutting out the center. This is actually a better approach since I can make the seal a complete 1-piece unit (as apposed to 4 separate sides that I'll have to glue together). I called it in and they are shipping them from Chicago to Fresno. They should be here this Fri and I am gonna go down to take a look at them to see how soft they are. I'm gonna look at a 2x12x2, a 3x12x12, and a 4x12x12 (inches) samples.
