22r engine removal question??????
« on: Apr 27, 2008, 02:52:24 PM »
Removing 22r 4wd from 84 pickup....do I need to remove transfer from tranny or can it all lift out as one piece. The manual says remove motor and trans but does not specify for four wheel drive.

I pull the transfercase crossmember and drop the t-case down.  That allows the upper bellhousing bolts to be taken out without busting your knuckles too badly getting them out from the top.  I don't ever pull the engine trans and case combo, its too easy to take them apart separately.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I would strongly advise seperating the transmission and transfercase from the engine. I tried doing them together once and failed miserably.

or remove the  6 tcase to trans bolts  and pull the engine and tranny  leaving the tcase  where it is

kinda  hard  to get it back in  but not bad

I've pulled the engine, tranny and case as a unit from a second gen and it was a pita to get it out.  I shoulda done what whitey suggested, but didn't want to crawl around on the ground where it was parked.

A gear wrench will help save the day when it comes to the top 2 bolts.  Saved my day!
