Engine Removal
« on: Jun 20, 2010, 04:36:39 PM »
Well I guess I have to remove the engine out or the 4Runner. How do I remove it without the head on? I don't want to damage anything

don't forget to unbolt it

I chained the motor mounts and strapped the rear to keep it level. i wasn't in the air long at all though.

Just bolt the chain to the block on opposite corners using the head bolts it will be good to go!

i've got no proof what-so-ever, but i don't think I would do this.

hrm.... do you have a lift? yes do as stated above. no, take as much as you can off it (a/c, Alt brackets, motor mounts if you can, flywheel clutch)  and pull it out. done it, your backs gonna hurt a bit though.

or may be to late.

I think headbolts are the best way to life when the heads are off. If you have bolts you are going to replace. I have alway seen when lifting by the sides of the block with the head off, the chain rubs the edge of the block to head surface, causeing it to form a ridge which will need to be tended to. If you are able to get around this with a engine level go for it, but head bolts are good to go.
If you see it, its for sale.

:ack:  ive never used the head bolts but i have used a couple short bolts (main bearing cap bolts from a junk engine) actually in the headbolt holes

ive also used lift tabs made to bolt into 10mm holes on the block and run a chain thru the large end

Take a couple old head bolts, heat them up and form a loop at the top.  Now you have lifting eyes  ;)
