toeyota's engine build
« on: Jul 24, 2007, 04:07:39 PM »
Alright, my engine has pooped on me once again so I'm puling it out and completely rebuilding it. I'm starting this thread mainly for suggestions and I'm sure ill need help somewhere along the way!

I pretty much know what i want out of this motor. I don't want to build it with enough power to "just get by". But then again i don't want something i cant rely on to get me up and down busy roads all day. I would like to have something to make people say dang, that thing will scoot. I already have a weber 32/36, a  header(no idea what brand), 2 1/4 exhaust but i have a muffler with a good bit of restriction from what i can tell. I'm running 36'' tires with 5.29 gears and a 4 speed Tanny(yea i know they suck).

I'm thinking, have the block bored .40 over, either buy a head from EB with over sized valves and  port and polish myself, or install over sized valves in my existing head and port and polish myself, whichever is cheaper. Also buy a new cam, something more aggressive than my 268 EB cam. (I want it to lope a little ).

Now here are my first questions:

1. Will re jetting my carb suffice for all these upgrades, or do i need to get the 38mm from weber?

2.  Will i need to upgrade ignitions for the setup i described above?

3. Ive been researching and Ive read some things about decking the block for more compression etc..  I have to be honest i dint know the first thing about all that. Obviously i want to get every pony out of this motor i can, so any tips and suggestions about machine work to the block would be awesome.

4. Lastly i would just like some opinions on having the motor balanced, and if there is anything i can do to the crank for more power like polishing it...

I think thats about it for now. ID like everyone to chime in and give some opinions on building this motor. Also i want to do it for a reasonable price, so keep in mind that i cant just go out and buy new carbs, ignitions and parts like its nothing.  If it will work good, i would love to use anything i already have! I'm not stuck on any modification i listed, so lets hear all the opinions and advice, thanks alot.

ah,  ok,  well then  you can  bore your block .040  use  stock "type" pistons  and  a 20R head and intake
along with 20R timing components

ive done  it man,   i ran a 20R head on my truck befor it was bored .060,

with the 20R head   7000rpm  is not uncommon  :burnout:

but  thats how i dropped the exhaust valve  at  near 7000 rpm  :thud:

Yeah, the more i think about it, the more i think i better stay closer to stock. Especially after reading your buildup. You think boring .040 is pushing the reliablity? Maybe i should just go .020. Ill worry about what to do to the head later. I want to do oversized valves, but i dont have a clue how to match the intake and exhast right so it will run right and all that mess. I need to keep reading, and hopefully some other guys will chime in.  If anybody takes interest to this thread ill start throwin some pics up when i pull the motor.

have your block line honed. have the rotating assembly balanced.
well worth the money. a nice set of swrill polished valves and
a mild port job. should be good to go.

you do NOT  want a 38 weber  they SUCK gas my 3236  gets me  17mpg  and  has  awesome perfomance

i think you should go with a  fresh  20R head and intake  on the 22R block

I talked to the only local machine shop in my area and they said they wont grind for over sized valves on a toyota head :dunno:. So ive just decided not to try and do all the HP mods. Im just going to bore it either .020 or .040 whatever you guys recommend, and i still might try and find a 20r head. But the head i have is basically brand new, so its hard not to use it even though its bone stock besides the cam. Im not real comfortable with tring to port and polish my head, and the machine shop wants around 300 to do the job so thats out.

I figure with boring it .040 over, installing maybe some Keith black pistons, and having it all balanced, along with the EB 268 cam and maybe rejetting my 32/36 weber, it should run great.

Anybody have any opinions of which pistons to install? Will Keith black's give me any more HP gain than just getting some from EB? Thanks again for all the help, and for putting up for the numerous questions. Dont worry as soon as i figure out what i want the progress and pics will come. Any other suggestions are more than welcomed!
