Truck Will Not Start!
« on: Oct 08, 2006, 05:28:35 PM »
88 Pickup with 22RE,5spd! Went out one day to start truck. Truck started right up and I let it warm up for 20 minutes and then cut it off. Went back a hour later to start up and it wouldn't crank. Here's what I know and what I've done so far.
1) This is a spark issue because their is no spark from the ignition coil wire and the plugs are not showing any spark.
2) I have replaced rotor, cap, plugs.
3) I have replaced pickup coil(signal generator), ignition coil and ignitor(with one I got off Ebay).
4)I have replaced the starter.
5) Battery is good.
6) I have checked all the grounds.
7) Swapped ECU and nothing.
8) Tried roll starting the truck with no luck!
When you turn the key the starter turns the engine but doesn't start. I have tried starting fluid down the intake manifold and wouldn'y start, so I eliminated the fuel route.........
ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? Please help..........Thanks.

Only thing I can think of is something else electrical, like check the fuses and fusible links and look to see if maybe a connector somewhere has come loose and cutting the spark is the computers way of shutting down because of the bad connection...MAF sensor, emissions control stuff like that.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

2nd on the fusible link, there is a wire that runs from the battery to the fuse box under the hood. check that, i think it should be a 100 amp wire.

Will that cause it not to have a spark? How can you check to see if it is the timing chain(short of taking the cover off)? I replaced the timing chain two years ago, but you maybe right.

if it sounds like it has compression on all cylinders when you turn it over then the timing chain isnt broken, if it spins freely w/o compression than it is broken. and no it will not have spark if the chain is broken because the distributor is ran off of the cam, but that wouldnt be your problem in the case of a broken chain.

take off the dis cap and turn the motor over if the rotor doesn't move your timing chain is broke.

Hey i bet you bent at least one valve when the timing chain blew. 22r and 22re  motors are interference motors which mean when you tried to roll start it the pistons were moving but the valves weren't.(bent valve) id take the head off and have your valves check just to be sure before you put a timing chain kit back in it might save you some heartache later.

You think even though the truck was parked and at a idle when it broke?

Easily possible. It's not about the RMP's, Its about a moving piston vs. not moving valve.

I was idleing(sp) when mine went and i bent 7 of the 8 valves. so rpm really don't play a factor.

Check your wiring(sp), fuses, grounds going to the head from the firewall, and from the frame to the block, maybe thats it :dunno:
