20r head on 22r motor
« on: Oct 13, 2006, 01:02:58 PM »
has anyone done a 20r head on a 22r motor and if so does it do anything for you? I had someone tell me that it give more power and compression. I was just wondering.

There's tons of info on the mod if you look around the board. Here's a link that might help...

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php/topic,27651.0.html

What I can personally tell you is that the 20R head has a hemispherical combustion chamber (it's a hemi) so it flows real nice making usable power up to 6000 RPM. It also has a smaller combustion chamber meaning it'll up the compression a bit. You're going to lose a bit of low end torque, but for a daily driver it's nice to have the stronger top end. Throw some O/S valves in there and a mild came and your well on your way to an R series motor that can actually get out of it's own way. If you ever plan on going EFI then this mod is not for you, since the FI intake won't bolt onto a 20R head. Also, I wouldn't use the stock 20R carb. Go with at the minimum a 22R carb, or better yet, a weber 32/36.

Our search function doesn't work very well usually, but if you just look at the thread titles and check the ones that look like they may cover it you'll find TONS of threads on this.  You can also check this thread for some good info on hybrids, http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php/topic,5628.0.html

With only a stock 20r head on a stock 22r bottom you won't gain too much.  Warm up the head a little though and it'll give good gains.  It's really a matter of how much you wanna dump into it.

I can personally tell you that going from stock 22r to slapping on a stock 20r head made my engine more usable and stronger everywhere.  I'm currently replacing a headgasket and will be dropping in a slightly bigger cam, but will be building another hybrid with big valves and port work in the near future.

Plenty of people here have done this. Just make sure you're using the "early" block and you'll save some time and effort. If you have any specific questions go ahead and ask. We need to get a 20/22r FAQ/writeup going, so maybe this could help others too.

Anyone got any pictures of when they did theirs? I know it's not difficult to explain. Just that some people may want to see the deiiferences.
