3RZ Problems
« on: Sep 14, 2006, 02:04:10 PM »
I was driving my 4runner and it started to kick and buck, then the check engine light came on. The truck was also backfiring a little bit, but it only happens when the truck warms up.
Does anyone know what this might be? Or maybe a website where I can find out how to get the Check engine code?
Any help would be appreciated. :help:

I think I found it, but I'll have to take it for a drive first. The plug wires are origonal from 1997 and one broke off. The check engine light is still on so if there is any info about that it would be awsome.

I know that you can reset the light by pulling the EFI fuse for about 30 seconds.

Those are the "hot wires" in the your air flow meter.  They need to be clean in order for your engine to run properly.  Those are pics of it without the plastic housing around the wires.  To check it, remove the 2 screws holding the sensor in place (right behind the air filter) and pull it out.  Look down inside the plastic housing with a flashlight to see the wires.  If they look dirty, clean them with a aerosol electrical cleaner.  Don't rub or touch them with anything cause they are brittle.  This is something we see at the dealership a long time.  Hope this helps...

Make sure you use a non-chlorinated cleaner, such as non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Spray it down letting the pressure of the spray do all the cleaning. Once it looks clean, stop spraying and let it air dry. I shake it around and then wave it back and forth letting the wind dry it down.

Make sure to hold it right-side up, like how it is mounted into your air intake system. Spray the wires from underneath the unit. That way you can prevent any liquid from entering the circuitry of the unit.

Thanks Mike, I'll have to check that out. It seems to be working great right now, even with an auto and that heavy 4runner, it picks up some fast. Also, do you know if you need all the vaccum hoses hooked up to that evap box? I have 2 disconnected and it still works fine.

Hah, Yea... maybe its a good idea to do. If the plug wires haven't been changed in 9 years then I'm sure they didn't check for a dirty sensor. :moon:

Thanks for the tips on how to keep the engine going good, any other help would be good... Just minor things that will help fuel economy and driveability.
