4x4 problems
« on: Oct 21, 2004, 08:25:18 PM »
:help:decided to go 4 wheeling earlier.  4x4 decided to go out on me  :rivers:
i heard a really loud pop from the front end, and then sounded like a scraping/grinding sound when I was in 4x4.  Had a friend check it out, and even when I am in 4 wheel drive, I'm not. :rivers:  I dont want to take it apart until I know what I am getting into.  I have a feeling I broke the ring gear, but I am not sure.  Truck runs fine in 2 wheel, no problems at all but now as soon as I lock up the hubs, the truck wont move.  Almost like something is wedged in the gears.

Any Ideas??

$10 says you had your tires turned when it happened.

Is this IFS or live axle?

It's got to be either the hubs or the ring&pinion.  Do you have stock gears?

Put the front on jack stands, spin front driveshaft. Listen for unusual sounds while spinning the front driveshaft. Lock in 1 hub, spin driveshaft, now the other one. It helps to have the truck in nuetral when doing this test. Check the play at the flanges, diff & transfer case.

I would really like to do a SAS.  However for someone with NO money, it is out of the question right now.  I have a total of like 150 right now.  And I have bad news.  I drained my front diff earlier, and I got small chunks of metal falling out of the hole :nerv:  I'm assuming gears??  also, when I stuck my finger in the hole, it felt almost like i was sticking my finger into the center hole of a bearing.  Is there one in there that could have fallen over the drain hole??
I am completely lost right now.  can ya'll help me out??

Don't IFS have a steel diff cover bolted to the diff housing?

Go to pirate and find somebody who's selling their IFS third member after they did an SAS.
