Anyone running Comp Cam in their 4 banger?
« on: Dec 08, 2005, 11:58:21 AM »
I have an 89 Ex Cab with a rebuilt 22RE that has 2500 miles on it.
The cam is a Comp Cams 22R grind with 222@.050 and .440" lift.

With the valves adjusted to Comp Cams specs, they make so much noise that the knock sensor kicks in :_order:
I called Comp Cams and they said to drop the adjustment down to .008" on both intake and exhaust. The knock sensor no longer kicks in but it sounds like a diesel engine. The 84 Ex Cab that I bought last week has 240,000 miles on it and it is very quiet compared to the 89.

Anyone else have this problem?
Is this normal?
Could a cam for a 22R cause this problem in a 22RE?

Hey,i had similar problem with my rv2 regrind. I set the intake at .06 and exhaust at .08. They usually sound loud and even louder with metal guides. Is your motor totally rebuilt? I had a problem with a downy cam cause I reused the rockers. I did all the break in procedure and applied expensive assembly lube. Id say maybe a thousand miles later i was up in PA at Paragon when I heard the rockers getting loud. The trusty ol 22re made it home so I figured it just needed adjustment but when I pulled the cover I found almost no lobes left. I was so pissed a 250 buck cam did this and even still my rockers were fairly new toyota ones. This is my 5th 22re rebuild and im still learning these are quirky engines. Let me know if any of this info helps anyone.

The engine is a new 7 year/70,000 mile warranty model. I'm not sure if the rockers are new or reground but the cam is a new Comp Cam model.

It has been noisey since I fired it up. Like I said earlier, it was so noisey with the valves adjusted to spec .010", it would kick in the knock sensor while driving down the road.

I fired up the engine with the valves set by the rebuild shop. After the 30 minute break in, I pulled the valve cover and checked the valves. They were a snug .010" between the adjuster and the valve. I took it for a drive and every few minutes the engine would just lose a lot of power for a couple seconds. The knock sensor was kicking in.

I called Comp Cams and told them about all of the noise and they said it would be okay to set the valves at .008". I set them at a snug .008" which reduced the sound enough so the knock sensor would no longer kick in but it is still noisy.

As far as I could find, Comp Cams only lists cams for the 22R, but, I was told that it would work in my 22RE. An interesting note is that the cam that is in my engine has lift and duration that is not listed in their catalog or on their web site. It is a little larger @ .050" than the catalog says.

I ordered the 2nd cam from the top, but the card says (if I remember correctly) 222 dur and 440 lift. http://compcams.com/Technical/CurrentCatalog/HTML/223.asp

What are the specs on your Comp Camp card?

22R are noisy,  what kind of oil are you using,    the cheaper the oil the louder it will be and the shorter time it will run,

ask me how i know

My wifes 84 with over 200,000 miles is quieter than my new engine.
