I beleive that's a newer short deck block since it has the single row timing chain.

FYI, If the motor is 84 or older you can run the factory dual row timing set from an  83 or older. I would also recommend running a 20r head. I am running a 20r head with 22r valves and the newer aluminum rocker assembly. What you end up with is good performance at a low price. If you have questions about running a 20r head hit me up. Some of the 20r heads are more desireable than others.

Go hybrid, it's the way to go if your trying to build a motor on a budget. You can build a hybrid for under $1000 bucks. To build a comperable later model engine your going to be in it for between 1500 and 2000 bucks depending on what all you need to replace. I spent 900 on mine, but that was with all new valves, all new hard parts, everything including the dual row timing.

That sounds like a great plan. Just so ya know not all tall deck motors had the dual row timing chains. Your motor (those were pics of your stuff right?) is definately a single row chain.

I have an 83 with a newer 85+ block.  Before I know this I had ordered the timing chain for the 83 which was a single row.  The info I got from Ted at enginebuilder is that 81-82 had double while 83-84 had single.  Of course after figuring out that I had a newer block I had to send it back and get the the right one.

They did put single row timing in some of the early blocks, I promise.

the first 22R's  where in late 1980  and had dual row till mid 1982,    after that they had  the single row chain but it was the identical length  since the block and head where the same

in  mid 84  , for the 1985 model year they introduced  the "laser" block, aka  the short deck block,  these had a shorter timing chain  and CANNOT  use  the dual row chain from the 20R.
there is a dual row  available  but its PRICEY  :bling:

the  "short deck"  aka Laser blocks  have  bolt holes  in different places   to be mounted in different chassis

some of the 84 tall deck blocks  have these same holes  but not many

yes  from 82-84  they had single row,  but a 20R  timing kit  will bolt right on

Thanks for backing me on that one Glen. I'm running an 82 22r block with a 78 20r head , 22r valvles aluminum rocker assembly and the dual row timing.  There is no better way to make one of these motors perform on a budget.

i ran one  for a long time  till i dropped a exhaust valve at about 7000 rpm  :yikes:

when i had to bore  the block  the  20R  head wouldnt stay sealed  so i put a ported 22R head on
