Brakes
« on: Aug 01, 2005, 11:56:51 PM »
Hi guys
Need some advice on me brakes.
Went out for a run on sat but b4 i got too the offroad i lost me brakes :shocking:  sseemd like the calipers got stuck and hot? .
Anyway ripped them apart and the left side seems to function fine ripped the right side out and found that 1 of the brake pads had cracked from what i dont know.
I replaced the pads on the right side and adjusted the rear drums but now im having a problem with it pulling to the left.
Any ideas ?
The rightt caliper seems to function ok the pistons seem too move better than the left side so im stumpd.
Thanks Dave

That could be your problem...if the piston moves too easily it may not be sealing in the caliper properly and allowing air to blow by, or more likely, if you broke the brake pad in half, the caliper is cracked and air is bleeding in that way.  I'd be going to grab me a new caliper.  Hell, I did both of mine plus new rotors when I got the truck just so I was sure that I had good functioning brakes.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

if it pulls to the left when braking, your turble is on the right.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

It'll save a lot of time and heartache if you just replace the calipers.  I mean $200 is worth it, brakes are dang'd near the most important mechanism on a drivable vehicle  :gap:

Ok lookin at replacing the calipers or geting reconditiond.
could it be that the pads on the right side are new and the left side are old?
also they are a diff brand so material maybe a problem.
Gunna change both sides with new pads if a no go then will get calipers done.
Cheers Dave

Yes. ALWAYS change both sides at the same time with the same type of new pads. You also need to have your rotors turned or replaced.

i'm not even gonna screw around with brakes this time around.  there's a saying, go ahead and skimp anywhere but don't do it with steering and brakes!

front is gonna get loaded calipers and rotors, rear is gonna get new drums and cylinders all from napa.  all my stuff is about ready to die so i figure i might as well do it the right way

Yes. ALWAYS change both sides at the same time with the same type of new pads. You also need to have your rotors turned or replaced.

now days they say only to do this if you have warped or out of limit rotors..Its no longer the way to turn rotors as part of the brake job..Only if there cracked,,warped or dished..If the rotor is otherwise ok they say to just replace pads..reason being is you have better braking with non turned rotors,,the brake material is inbedded on the rotor thus giving better friction between the pad and rotor..when you turn the rotor you loose that material in the rotor...

dave, always replace pad in a set..if the price is right get new ones,,if not recondition will be fine...Also upgrade to dot 4 fluid,,won't hurt nothing and its the shizzle,,should help with heat in the fluid from heavy use..

Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

Hey thanks guys changing the pads on sunday along with new brake fluid.
Had new rotors when i did the SAS in december so the rotors should be ok and the calipers where actualy rebuilt back then so new pads shud work.
Also fitting the 30 spliners from Bobby .

I've seen more problems with brakes after putting in just new pads!  Best and safest thing to do is just replace the whole caliper with a remanufactured unit.  And should turn rotors and replace both at the same time!  I did alot of brake work at Les Schwab and seen this a thousand times.
