ford 460 on a toy buggy
« on: May 05, 2005, 08:12:54 PM »
ima newbie to mechanikin and kind of a newbie to 4byin. will a 460 work with  toyota transfer cases and birfield axles and everything toyota. reason i chose the 460 is its allmost free and the toyota stuff is because toyotas r the best 4byers. i also have smaller ford motors if the 460 is too big. two 302s  a 390 and a 351.  thanks for any info
its a truck its built for this kind of stuff.

i think a 460 isn't the greatest choice for a buggy, it's heavy and HUGE, and as strong as toyota transfer cases are, i wouldn't try them behind that monster.

the 302 would be a lot better choice, even then i might think twice about using a toyota tranny or axles.  however it's a lot lighter than a small block chevy.

If you built the toyota axles with cromos and 4.10 gears, a turbo tranny, and 23 spline t-cases, then you should be fine.  but i have no experience with that stuff.

make sure you're using V6 thirds, even a 302 will chew up a 4cylinder third member/gearset if you're not careful. as for shafts, no problems there

With boost controller, upgraded fuel delivery, 3" exhaust system, and intercooler- the 22RTE will put out in excess of 350HP, at about 25 psi!

yeah, but the 302 can put out that power at a much more usable RPM.  don't get me wrong, i love the 22R/22RE/22RTE engines but they aren't all that powerful.

don't even think of the 2F!  it's a boat anchor, the only place that belongs is in a land cruiser, and that's if you don't feel like swapping it out for something lighter, like a big block.  it's basically a 50s/60s chevy I6 with metric bolts.  pretty reliable but it weighs a ton and doesn't put out a lot of power
