Best advice, read ZUK's site:   http://www.gearinstalls.com.  He even has a page dedicated to showing off the tools required/useful, http://www.gearinstalls.com/gearinstalltools.htm

Also, look for his 'cheatsheet' of common shims to use with certain setups as a starting point.  http://www.gearinstalls.com/cheatsheet.htm
