and of course then comes into play the lobe separation of the cam and lift and duration.  most engines the exhaust valve closes before the intake opens but on race engines  the intake starts opening before the exhaust closes creating a siphoning effect at high rpm's and at low rpms the same engine sputters and sounds like its missing because the valves overlap. this is what makes them "lope".
