I don't know much about the axle configurations you choose, but do feel its strange you feel the D44 can only hold a 35" tire. If I was in your shoes I'd do option two and upgrade as needed.
The 44's can be found for relatively cheap. The more I think about it, after longs, high steer, lockers, armor, bearings and rebuilt kit I have enough money in my toys to have built a nice strong 44.
