I've been thinking about it for some time, I have a 3.4 and a r150 trans with a 5.15 gear set in it, I was thinking that would be cool. But on the way home from Colorado I changed my mind, here's what I'm thinking now.  89-92 tbi 350/SM465/dual ultimate 23 spline, to mini axles front and rear 4.10 e-lockers and 37"-38" tires.  This is going to be a long term project. I'm thinking at least 2-2 1/2 years.

Definately ditch the junk cruiser axles.   Im building one for a buddy basically like you are.  Its got a 350 and th400 in it already and he just picked up a dana 20 and I got him a set of mini axles.  Mini's are the only way to do. ;)

Looks like it'll be a fun buildup for sure.

wouldn't the cruiser axles hold up a little better with a heavy rig like that, being that they have 8.75" ring gears(or something like that)?  well, except for the rear c-clips...

Those being early (70) axles they'd have 10 spline shafts.  The later (76+) have 30 spline like mini's but the pinions are UBER weak!  That coupled with the c-clips and the unavailability of affordable aftermarker parts makes  them a bad choice.

EDIT:

And you'd be suprised as to their weitght too.  On my buddies 76 with a full cage, winch, 350 and th400 sitting on 36's he weighs 4200 lbs.  Same as my truck. ;)

Last time I put the truck on the scale it was 4300 lbs.   :o  But  if this thing had a motor in it I'd run the straight 6. But I had a 85 CJ with a 91 tuneport vette motor in it. That pretty much ruined it for me, I've gotta have the 350 back. I've got an old hemi in the garage that I've been saving for a 32 Ford hot rod project but that is  not going to happen if a little one is going to be on the way. So this is going to be kind of my last hurrah as far as projects go, it will be a no holds bar project!! The wife and I have always not wanted kids, but now want them bad, don't know it's kind of weird. We've been married for  for 18 years and I guess this is the next step in life , don't know??

Thats a real cool truck. I like the jump seats in the back. Its got a military look with the minimal interior, I like it. Lets see a pic from drivers seat looking back please. Whats the wheel base compare to by toy trucks? standard short bed? The build up sounds sweet. Gotta push that front axle forward and put IFS rear. Hope to see lots of pics.

Had to give 700 clams for it plus fuel to Colorado and back. It has no motor but had the trans and t-case. I think it was a fair price.

Where where where?  Is it toyota?

Also, if it were mine I'd go a little more different than everybody else and go with a caddy 502.

Yes it is a Toyota, I think it is out of a 85' Landcruiser... but I'm not positive. Are they any good? I know everything is backwards, manifold is on the opposite side. He only wants $600 for the whole truck... motor running gear and frame are good.

You should consider a 93-97 4.5L LC motor.  They are very sweet.

Here's my three-year projecct - a 1980 model.

LC axles are WAAAAY stronger than mini axles.
