3rz swap in my 83
« on: Nov 05, 2015, 02:59:05 PM »
This should be fun.

I'm starting my thread for my 3rz swap.  Bare with me it may be a bit slow and I'll take all the help I can get.  Also if I leave anything out that anyone wants to know.  Just ask and I'll fill you in

I have an 83 long bed and I'm putting a 3rz from a 95 tacoma. Both were 5 speeds and 4wd.    I just bought the engine and tranny. Didn't get the whole truck  so hopefully it dosent hinder me that much.

As of today, I just got my engine mount adapters from Chilkat ($150) in the mail. I also purchased a new MAF ($50) Bc I didn't notice it missing on the engine.  I'm going with a w56 tranny with a w59 bell housing Wich from what I read is pretty typical. Luckily my family has a spare w56 laying around so I didn't have to buy one. But I am getting a new clutch for it ($100 roughly)

And so.   :welcome:  :welcome:  :welcome: to my thread

So a W59 clutch will mate up to a W56 trans?

What would be the difference? ?    I ordered a clutch for a 2.7 3rz.  Should be for the w59 I would think.     Am i wrong?

yea the W56 has the same input shaft as a w59, plus you cant bolt a 22re /w56 pressure plate onto a 3rz flywheel, but i have heard of some guys using the 22re clutch disc with a w59 3rz pressure plate, hell im using a 3rd gen 22re/w56 throwout bearing with my 3rz/w59 clutch since i got sent the wrong throwout and it was all i had, surprisingly it works

Well that's good then.   It went on no problem.  Since I didn't have a pilot  bearing puller I had to improvise. So that was fun.  First time doing that as well.     Now it's time to find out what needs to be moved where. Fun stuff  :usa:

I use old hamburger or hot dog bun, or a couple pieces of white bread keep packing in pilot bearing hole, 3/8 brass drift, keep packing bread and hitting in with drift, works really well

Go ahead and run your fuel lines while the engine is out it's much easier. Also I found that using the heater control valve from a 3rd gen pickup allows use of the factory 3rz heater hoses.

Hey guys I need a little help

I was thinking of buying an in line fuel pump to put on my swap instead of swapping gas tanks. But I'm not sure what the psi needed is. I can't find it.

Any thoughts on an in line fuel pump?
Also should I up my lines to a bigger diameter? ?

You must use a larger fuel line, factory 22re Lines are sufficient, factory tacoma lines are what I ran. It is easier to swap tanks on my opinion. Anything from 85-95 works.

So I finally got the fuel lines in. I will get pictures up later.  I decided to use my stock tank in the 83 and run an inline fuel pump. Also ram new 5/16 line to feed the engine. All I could find was standard fittings but I needed at least one metric fitting. Luckily since I wasn't going to use the tank from the 3rz I just robbed that fitting and wallah. It's perfect now. Also got in the return line.  And used the regular line the 83 had. Just rerouted.      Pics to come..

I'm also running an electric fan.. With the 22RE, it stays cool while I'm goin down the freeway, and having the ability to shut the fan off is especially nice when I hit deep water... Believe it, this fan sucks less power than the mechanical fan, and hooked up to an emergency temp sensor relay, if I'm dumb and forget to turn it on, it'll turn itself on. I have it set to turn on just past the midway point on my temp gauge.  All in all, it's a really great way to get more efficiency out of your rig :D

Unless you had something changed (cams, higher compression...) it will sound like a honda civic at idle, then when you romp on it and spin her up about 4500-5k it has a deep throaty sound
