20R rebuild help asap
« on: Jun 18, 2015, 07:22:33 PM »
I'm currently rebuilding my 20R and upon taking off the cam shaft bearing caps I found that the number 1 and 2 bearing caps are broken. They seem to have been cracked or fully broken for some time. The previous owner was a bit.. slow..

Does anyone have the 2 bearing caps? I need them pretty quickly. Or all 3 caps and the cam shaft they come with? I don't really want to get a whole new head.
Thanks.

Your going to need all three, they need to be machined for camshaft

20r & 22r heads don't have camshaft bearings.

Yeah I suppose I messed up by saying cam shaft bearings, but I do need the caps to hold the cam shaft down.

So could I get another cam shaft and the caps? Or do I have to get a whole new head? Some people are saying they area head specific??

If you get ahold of some caps the caps and the head will have to be machined.  There's no telling if the bores will be round or not with the new head/cap combo so what they do is shave a little off the mating surface of the caps and then put them on the head and re-bore the holes, making the bores the right size.

I had to do this to a connecting rod I got because the cap and rod were from different pieces.  Ended up having both ends of all 4 rods done.  More money but everything matches now :).

You should be able to use your cam as long as it's still within spec.

Sounds like a big hassle. I may just get a whole different head.

Thanks for the info though!

Yeah you could do that.  It might not be very expensive though check with a machine shop unless you can find a cheap head.
