No trick. I used a peace of 2x4 to start it. Then switched over to a Brass Drift and 3 pound hammer to finish it off.
after you get it started. Use the drift IN start pattern to evenly seat the race.

I took my brass punch and layed it flat across the top and beat the crap out of it. I rotated the punch to keep everything going in even.

i kinda set it in straight then lightly tapped it with a normal hammer to get it started then as soon as it was going in straight i just started pounding the crap out of it with the hammer. work fine, didn't bend or anything.

If you stick them in the freezer for a couple of hours before install, they go in real easy.

Harbor freight sells a Race/bearing setter kit for like $29.99, also works like a charm.

Axle rebuild question! need help asap
« Reply #15 on: Nov 24, 2009, 09:20:50 PM »
I have a newbie question then.  When I rebuilt my 85 axle, the area where the bearing sat already looked like this \ /. The bearing sat nicely in there.  I couldn't see where the cup would go.  I'm getting the feeling that this might end up being an issue, unless certain axles were made that way.  I don't have pics, but my bearing sat flush in the top of the knuckle ball. Also in the FSM, I didn't see where it showed to insert the bearing cup.  Did I screw up royally or what? HELP.

***If you look at the diagram in the SA: Brakes, Suspension, Steering section at the top of this forum section, it doesn't show the bearing cup either.****

Any ideas.

The cup should sit flush with the ball, and the fsm does not show replacing the cup but you can if you want to. If you look around here (search Box at the top) or you can go to trail gears web site and when you go to there front axle rebuild kit there is a drawing you can look at. I just finished mine so if you can post pics we can help you further.

Thanks Crawlerdad.  I must have just missed the part where i had to push out the old cup. When I get a chance (i.e. $$$$) I will pull it apart, get some pics and rebuild it. Luckily it's not a DD so I have some time. Plus, Christmas is on it's way as well as the yearly bonus.  Should be soon. thanks
