I always tell everyone...  Rebuild it yourself!  Really really simple job and you will save a ton of cash.  enginebuilder.com for a good deal on the parts.

There's a machine shop few blocks away. But don't I need macrometers and bore gauge and other precision instruments to build it myselft? I have those (3/8 &1/2) Snap On Torque Wrenches and feeler gauge set.

Well it's nice to plasti-guage the rod and main journals before you do a final assembly but the machine shop can measure everything and put it to spec and tell you what bearings and pistons to order to fit whatever they did. Plasti-guage is like $2.00.  Pick up a tube of engine assembly lube. A cheap engine stand is nice to have. You might need a piston ring compressor to get the pistons back in and maybe a set of those special pliers to install the rings on the pistons.  Other than that if you have the torque wrenches you are good.  I just assembled a bottom end with my 9 and 12 year old and they were both almost disappointed at how simple it was. We are building a 22r in or dining room.

Not everybody likes to do engine work but it's honestly harder to get all the stuff off the engine than it is to reassemble the real meat of the engine.

x2!  ive done a few, you dont need all the fancy tools, just patience and the willingness to spend time building it, a FSM helps the most when doing your 1st one.

the machine shop does all the magic, you just assemble it

I've built 5 or 6 20/22r's, simple!!! Just take your time and keep everything clean. I'm finishing up another 22re for my dads 93 as we speak, hopefully fire it up tomorrow or saturday! Find a good machine shop and you'll be golden!

Thanks for input guys. 22REperformance sells the rebuild kits with OEM parts instead of going engnbldr route.

If I remove the engine will the trans be supported on its own since it's a 4wd I'm concerned about being able to role on the driveway. Or have to put a jack under it?

pull the shifters, then use a ratcheting strap with a 2x4 across trans tunnel to support it, and yes it will roll, wheel chocks, e brake
