R150F whine and clutch issue
« on: Mar 06, 2015, 04:03:48 PM »
I have a 99 4runner with R150F. In neutral there is a constant "whirring" noise that turns into a higher pitched whine as RPMs increase. The noise goes away as the clutch pedal is depressed. The whine is RPM dependent throughout each one of the five gears, increasing in pitch as RPMs increase. Once the clutch pedal is depressed to change gears, it makes a sharp whine sound then is silent until the pedal is released and shifted into another gear.

The 4runner has 142k miles on it, and I've been noticing it isn't going into all of the gears as smoothly as it used to. I'm going to purchase the HD Marlin clutch package because I think (hope*) the clutch isn't fully disengaging which is causing the tough shifts. It's daily driven with 285 tires, and wheeled semi-often. If anyone could share some insight on what they think the whine and rough shifts could be from, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

At 142k miles with noise, I'd say it's time to rebuild the tranny...........

Take the shift boots off (so you can see the tranny) and listen..........

T/O Bearing like ThorInc suggested.

If your trans is bad and you're anywhere near Tucson I have a super clean, low mileage R150F out of a 99 4Runner. Was in my donor vehicle for my 3.4 swap.

Not yet unfortunately. I have the parts sitting in the garage, just haven't had the spare time yet! It's driving me nuts. Hopefully in 2 weeks

Well I'm at a loss here. My friend who is a toyota master tech replaced the clutch, pilot, throw out, input shaft bearing. All bearings inside the trans felt great, and there was no wear on the transmission gears. I had already purchased the input shaft bearing so I figured why not replace it even though the existing one felt great. Put the whole thing back together and it shifts great with awesome pedal feel....but still whines

A long long long time ago I rebuilt a W50 tranny in my sisters Corona after the input shaft gear and bearing were trashed.

Replaced all the bearings and the input shaft.

It had a whine until teeth broke on the countershaft.

Which is when I figured out the problem.

The center part of some of the bearings were 2 pieces.     One of the pieces acted like a spacer.

When removing the bearings on the countershaft,  one of those spacers remained on the countershaft.      The new bearing was then installed with its spacer.        So now there was 2 spacers instead of 1 on the countershaft.     That preloaded the gears, causing a whine and eventual teeth breakage.

Didn't see the problem until after the teeth broke and everything was apart again.

Crazy, my '99 4Runner with the R150F 5 speed has made that whining since I bought it with 151k.

I bought the Marlin 1200 lbs clutch kit, replaced the clutch, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, flywheel, shifter seat, resealed rear main and replaced seal, replaced T-case, trans, and axle fluids.

The vehicle now shifts great, but alas that noise is still there. I was thinking input shaft bearing after doing some research, but the fact that you replaced yours and it didn't fix it makes it extra puzzling.....
