R150F Gear Whine
« on: Sep 23, 2005, 07:57:46 PM »
I have a 98 4runner with 3.4L V6 and a noisy R150F 5speed.  Vehicle has 75000 miles and hasn’t done any heavy towing etc.  Over the past year and a half (25000mi) the tranny has developed significant gear whine in all but 4th gear.  The noise is particularly noticeable when unloading the geartrain such as backing off the throttle on a downhill, and sounds like pinion noise in a worn rear diff, but definitely never appears in 4th.  This lead me to think input bearing or front bearing on the countershaft. I recently pulled the tranny and replaced these bearings.  Inspection of the old bearings showed they were in decent shape but I had special ordered new ones, so replaced them anyway.  Everything else appeared fine.  Upon re-assembly and test drive, I still have my noise…and a wasted weekend  :smack:

Anyone have any thoughts on the source of the noise?

I vote countershaft bearings.  Rebuild time.  Call Marlin's.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...
