Early 22re to late 22re
« on: Jan 19, 2015, 06:10:31 AM »
I went to rebuild my 86 and found it was already bored 40 over. I picked up a core out of a 2wd 92'. This block is actually really nice with original toyota pistons. I'm building for reliability on the trail.  Everything was working good on my old motor, just rattled and lots of blow by. I'm planning on only using the block and picking up a new head, and bolting on my 86 intake stuff.
Found a crack in my exhaust manifold. Can the 92 exhaust manifold be drilled and tapped to accept the O2 sensor?
Is there anything else on the 92 I should reuse that works better than the 86?

Generally there isn't alot of difference, but there is enough that it could be a pain.  I'd stick with the 86 manifold.

Alot of guys go to the newer TPS intake.  It is a straight flow, versus the angled down on the earlier styles.

Where's the O2 sensor on a 92?

What's the difference between a 92 and 86 O2 sensor?       I know 86s are single wire on a flange, but other than the flange it's a typical 1 wire sensor......  (BTW, I converted my 86 to a 3-wire)

Why can't you move it below the manifold?
Add it to the the down tube (weld in bung) and then you don't have to worry about cracking the manifold.
You can try to drill and tap the manifold, but IMHO any thing you do to one that is not required is just asking for problems.
I am not sure how thick the area is you want to drill and tap but you have to worry about having enough matterial in that area.

The boss for the O2 sensor is already there. That's why I figured I could just drill and tap that one. Somewhere I read that I need the heat from the exhaust manifold to make the sensor work right.

If you use a 3 wire O2 sensor you don't have to worry about the exhaust heat.

You just need to power the O2 sensor from an ignition power source and ground a wire.

89-92, 22re's have the o2 sensor down by the cat.  Earlier has it in the manifold.  93 on, has it by the cat also, but the wiring for it is different.  4 wire IIRC.

#1. Is it the style with the two studs or the threaded style, most Toyotas I have seen have the two stud style).
If its the stud style and the studs have snapped, yes you can drill them out and re-tap the holes.
Just be carefull they like to break drill bits as well as easy outs.

#2. The sensor works off the exhaust gases/heat from the motor.
