20R/22R/22RE billet aluminum half-moon gaskets
« on: Dec 09, 2014, 06:19:17 PM »
Well I've seen these around on various engines and I hate the rubber ones sooooo.... Had my buddy whip up a program on the CNC and pump out some prototypes. They are based EXACTLY like the factory half moons only scaled down slightly to fit fairly snug with enough clearance for silicone to complete the seal. Here are a few pics, wanted to see if people would be interested in these before we pump a bunch of them out. Also was going to either put the Toyota 3rd gen symbol OR the old school "T" on one side then NFM Customs logo on the opposite side... Looking for some feedback here!  :dunno:  :beerchug:  Let me know what you think!

That's cool.........

I think interest would be based on cost.........

The only thing I can think of is that if they're snug,  is have an CNC'd nut on them so you can break the glue bond after they've been glued in awhile............ (or 2 holes for a pin wrench)

I first saw these from 22reperformance and thought it was a good idea.

I'd prefer mine in the old teq flavor.  Price is definitely the big issue here

I'm with Nate, and Emsvitil.

And I would get with Mike on this before you start selling them.  For a couple reasons.  1. He is very picky about people selling "New Manufactured" items on here, and 2. he might be interested in them as a product for Marlin Crawler.   So get with him on this, before you commit, just to stay in good standing on the forum.

But I like!!

Yes, I'm not looking to get rich by any means! I just thought that some of you might be interested... I would actually lose money on this deal but I like the design and would like real world feedback... I just have to make a quick decision on buying materials and running the CNC so yes, I do not want to step on anyones toes. I'd appreciate if BigMike would chime in, I have no intentions on marketing these, just have an opportunity to machine some and see how they work out for my fellow wheelers. Regardless, I am making a few sets to run. Not advertising, just testing the waters! I've been a member on this forum for 8 years, so I have a massive amount of respect here. Thank you all for your input so far!

I agree it would be pretty sweet with the old school TEQ on it...

I like TEQ better than the "T" actually... Thanks for the suggestion guys! I'll have my buddy program that in there today if he gets a chance. If we do a batch I'd imagine they'd be around the $20 a set, not too bad as 22re performance sells theirs for $30 and those don't have the nice factory style grooves in them.

Definitely a great idea! Not yours, but a great idea non the less! I'm down for a set. Would like to see how these fit compared to the ones from 22RE performance. Was shocked at how crazy tight his tolerances were. Without giving away more than I should, the set from Jim & Jerry actually comes with 3 pieces for best possible fit. How have you compensated for the various thicknesses in head castings? The head on my red truck was actually thicker than all the various heads they checked before the prototypes were produced. Had to open the groove up to 0.430 for an extremely tight fit on the rear of the head, front was not even close to that thick and fit just fine, no leaks so far!

Hey all, so im the guy behind the controls on this project. First and foremost I want to say thanks for all the positive feedback and interest in the part.

Acknowledging that this has been done once before by another company I still consider it twisted toy's brain child since he proposed it to me and we agreed we could add our own flavor & ideas to the part to make it marketable.

Feature changes were considered to make what we considered to be the best possible product and also so that we weren't going step on anybodies toes. Which reminds me, we aren't aiming to sell these through the forum and the sanctity of the usage terms per the forum are of mine and twisted toy's utmost priority.

OCD, you raise a really good point. i've made a considerable amount of prototypes to get the front plug fitment as close to perfect as possible. I've taken readings on the back end and know i've got my work cut out for me. It'd be nice to have a range of thickness differences between castings but im not going to hold my breath on that one :gap:

As far as aiming to make a one size fits all part, ill do my best. They will without-a-doubt be a press fit part with hopefully minimal tap-tap-tapping :hammerhead:

Emsvitil, I really like the idea, i will look into adding that into the program as they are a bit of a pain to remove. if these ever see the 'production light of day' we'll be sure to throw you a set free of cost for the input.

As it currently stands, if you guy's like the 20$ price point for a set (front and rear) i think we can definitely make that happen. it jives with my cost analysis anyway.

i'd love to get the old school teq engraved on the face, legalities may come into question though, not sure...

Ill keep my eye on the thread and answer any questions you guy's have to the best of my abilities. im currently in college and on winter break so ill make tweaks to the program and based on input from you guy's and gagged interest ill probably start pumping a couple batches out around the beginning of the year....it all depends on how interested you guys are.

Again, thanks for the interest and input!

FWIW, 0.430 has so far been the thickest rear potion of the head casting that the guys at 22RE Pef have seen. Would like my set with no logo's if possible, will pay extra, please & thank you!

OCD, yes I am not taking credit for "inventing" these things by any means. I've seen them come factory on Evo 4g63 heads and then I saw 22re performance had them as well so I figured we would try to throw in a little bit of a "twist" to improve on the design. Good to hear yours are working out, I almost bought a set from them but things just fell into place so we went with it!

Tyler is the man behind the programming and machining. I'd have to say these came out WAY better than I was imagining! SO mad props to you buddy! Without you, I'd just be ordering a set instead of creating a brand new part that will outlast the factory piece. Gives both of us motivation to create high quality parts for an already high quality vehicle! I have 4 more heads that we need to take measurements off of to help dial in the "one size fits all." I'm working on a few other performance pieces for us yota guys will all benefit from to keep our rigs on the roads and trails!

Emsvitil, your idea is awesome! :yesnod: Definitely be putting that into the plans! I agree, if these come through you'll be receiving a free set for sure! :beerchug:

Glad to see that there is a high level of interest in these sweet little pieces!

Or the third option would be a recessed hex bit.

The pin wrench or hex hole would need less aluminum......

The holes for a pin wrench would probably be the least likely to strip or round out/off

The pins on my cheapo harbor freight pin wrench are just under 4mm

I was just bustin your chops, my comments weren't meant to be rude. Jim & Jerry are friends of ours so I plug their crap as much as possible. I definitely think you have some nice improvements in your design, which is why I want a set! Question- it's hard to tell in the pics but it almost looks like there is a small groove, front to back, on the top of the one sitting in the head on the bench, why? Maybe I'm wrong and just hard to see on my phone...  :beerchug:

Yeah I know  :cheese: Little groove for silicone... like the stockers, think we should make the top flat? Might be a better idea to not have that groove on the top OCD...

Our rig is a trailer queen but the flat top prototypes haven't leaked so far... And as you said, one less step in the process is definitely a good thing!

I think the top should be flat.......

The first few pictures on twisted's work bench are the first two to roll out of the lathe and yes, they did have a groove to match the rubber one that I pulled my numbers off of.

The latest one's don't have that groove any longer. Theres no need for it, the height matches the entire mating surface now. groove free

Those look really cool, if they don`t leak you will be set. The originals are always a spot where a oil leak will develop.
