Trans shifter hits transfer case shifter...?

In my '84 when the transfer case is in 4-low the transmission shift lever grazes the side of the transfer case lever on the 1-2 shift.  I've replaced the shifter bushing with one of the Marlin nylon pieces and that made it better - it used to have so much slop in it the trans shifter would knock the xfer case lever back into neutral when shifting.   The trans shifter didn't have any bushing at all in it, just a rubber O-ring that wasn't doing any good and the feel of the shifter is so much better now with the bushing in there, but I'm afraid I'm still going to have problems with the one lever hitting the other when climbing in 4-low and shifting from 1st - 2nd gear.  It really sucks to get knocked into neutral when trying to shift while climbing a hill...   :tantrum:

What would be causing this?  There is hardly any play in the transfer case lever at all.

This is a common problem. You can either modify your shifter, rotate your t-cases or live with it.  :dunno:

Really?  Weird.  Do all of them have this problem then?

I guess modifying the shift lever would be the easiest thing to do.

Thanks!

Every toyota that. I have ever owned has interference between the two shifters. Best way to modify the t-case shifter is to pull it out then notch it so that it bends easier. After it is bent reinstall it and see if it works. If everything is good remove it again and weld it at the notch.

I had a 84 and never had the problem but my 83 does. I did as stated above and has worked great ever since.

My 86 never had this problem....... (even with a worn-out shifter base)

Might depend on the tranny/transfer combo.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll have to find someone with a welder.  A welder is on the "must have" list but I just bought this house and there's lots of fixing up to do before I can buy one.

zippo - as mentioned I installed one of the Marlin shifter seats.  I didn't mention it, but I also installed the ball socket.  It helped a lot - before I did that the shifter was super sloppy as it had no seat at all and was just the metal ball of the shift lever riding right on the aluminum of the shifter socket.  Someone had put a big O-ring in there that was doing nothing.  Like that the trans lever was smacking into the t-case lever and knocking it right out of gear.  Now it just grazes it, but I'm afraid it's still going to knock it out of gear.

The t-case shifter is nice and tight, hardly any slop at all in it.

Being an '84, the tranny is a g54, right?  This truck was all original when I got it, no reason to believe the t-case has been changed out.

I wonder why some trucks have this problem and others don't...

It might be the difference between top shift tcases and forward shift tcases.
