Clacking from 22re
« on: Apr 12, 2014, 02:10:40 PM »
I have a clacking noise coming from the upper section of an '84 22re, that I haven't been able to find the cause of yet.  I figured I would post up here and see if anyone else has an idea before I pull the engine.
Video:

History:
Bought truck w/blown HG(blew in Sept. of 2010, bought truck in May 2011).
Head was inspected, machined, new valve guides.
New timing chain and guides.
Truck has been a restoration project for the last couple of years, and while not on the road the engine was warmed up to operating temp and the truck was driven around property plenty of times and no noises other than the usual 22re noise.
After about 30 miles on the road the clacking developed around 2800rpms, but went away at 3000rpms, after after another 35 miles clacking starts just above 2200rpms, then goes away at 3000rpms(or is happening fast enough to not be easily heard).

Inspection:
-Baffle in head cover is tight, no wear marks on the cover from where the a rocker arm would/could be hitting the cover, and noise is there with cover lifted lifted off the head.
-Two collars on the intake rocker assembly are in place,
-The intake/exhaust valves are at 7/11,
-No oil on spark plugs and the compression is 190/190/185/190 cold, so I am assuming I don't have a new broken valve guide.
-The timing chain is tight, guides are both there,
-With a stethoscope the sound is louder in the head than the block, and you can feel the vibration caused by the noise through the throttle body when using revving the engine by hand.

It doesn't sound like a bad rod bearing, it sounds to high pitched as far as my experience with rod knock goes(350, 3.0, 7mgte), and it isn't heard on start up or when turning it over when turning the engine over during a compression check.

Does it do it with the valve cover off?

I'm thinking the rocker arms are hitting it.......

That was my first thought as well, since I had just rechecked the valves and head bolts before taking it out on the street.  However with the cover held an inch above the head, the noise is still there, and there are no wear marks on the cover.

I will have to inspect the rockers a little closer tomorrow.

Wrist pin?

A buddy who has heard it said the same thing, and from what I have found so far bad pins do sound similar to valves.

have you ever heard a 22re rod knock before this?at around 15 sec. it sounds just like my old 22re which had the 1st and 2nd rod bearings toasted, it would idle fine but then once the throttle was applied and between that and 2500 rpms under load it would make that sound, kinda sounded like a wood pecker tapping on the side of the motor and it just got progressively worse til it threw a rod.

doesnt sound like an iginition ping pre detonation either but i could be wrong ?

could also be a collision between a valve an the piston head?how is your timing? could have jumped a tooth maybe?

if it still does it with the valve cover not tighten down its deffently not that.

inspect the rockers, cam for flat spots, and if u want to pull the pan and wiggle the rods and see if they move alot just do eliminate it being a rod knock.

I had the same noise, caught it quick and pulled the rod bearings. Almost too late. Rolled in new rod bearings and mains, changed the oil 4 different times and it ran great. Maybe wrist pin bushings as well.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.

Up until now my only experience with rod knock was on straight 6's, V6's and V8's, none of which sounded as high pitched as the sound the 22re was making.  After finding nothing at all wrong with the head/cam/valves, nor anything with pulleys or water pump, I dropped the pan and sure enough, the #1 and #2 rod ends were movable up and down/back and forth.  I thought I was lucky, the crank mic'd just barely within specs, so I picked up a set of stock bearings, but after installing them #1 rod still had a slight amount of play in it.  I considered just running 20/50 weight oil, but since it was already half torn down, so I figured I might as well and pull it, and rebuild the bottom end to go with the rebuilt head.
