Dual Diaphragm Brake Booster In A First Gen
« on: Mar 30, 2014, 09:39:14 PM »
I just did this upgrade on my 1980 pickup. The booster I used came out of a 1990 4x4 V-6 4Runner. I custom fabbed the new bracket using one of the existing 3/16 spacers then copied it onto a piece of 1/4 inch plate. Then used a piece of 3" tube for the spacer. I welded 4 carriage bolts onto the spacer that mates with the firewall. As far as a extension for the brake pushrod I did not take any pictures but I basically welded the old piece that connects to the brake pedal on top of the same piece that came with the new booster plated it up with some 1/8th inch for strengthen and it works perfect. The overall width of the new spacer is 1 3/4" and the booster clears the steering rod as well as the clutch master cylinder. Very happy with this upgrade it is probably one of the best upgrades I have done to my rig in awhile. Heres some pics enjoy :smokin:

Please excuse the boogered up hole I didn't have a hole saw that was big enough :shaking:

I used one from I think a 92 p/u and was able to make it work without an adapter.  I have the part number somewhere.  It's a real good upgrade.

I have read that a dual diaphragm from a 1986/87 turbo pickup is a direct swap. NAPA sells them new for $151.19

Mine hit the intake on my 3rz swap as well. I dented it in and let it eat. Sitting in the truck as I type this. No issues.

More then one way to skin a cat. I just did this to my 85 pickup. 1988 Land cruiser dual diaphragm booster got from rock auto A-1 CARDONE 532570. master cylinder from 1994 4runner 4x4 CARDONE SELECT 132711 it has 1"bore. I do need to get a connector for the low fluid light now. Had to bend the lines a little bit but not to bad, worked out pretty well.

You have a lot less room in a first gen than a second gen truck.
