Better or upgrade heater fan?
« on: Feb 10, 2014, 02:54:57 PM »
Anyone do anything with the stock heater fan or find a upgrade replacement? My 1st gen heater fan just doesn't seem to crank it out. I replaced the fan resistor but still not what I think it should do. Maybe a Taco fan/motor?

There were a few different climate air ducting arrangements for the 1st gen. Some only produce heat out the floor and defroster modes (like my 1981), some produce heat out the floor, defrost., and center vent only, some produce heat everywhere including both side vents (like the Crawler Truck), and some have fancy dash-mounted heater vents that direct heat towards the wing windows for a clear view of your side mirror. ....maybe parts of your system behind the dash are plugged, or loose, and half your air is just blowing out randomly cooking the components behind your dash :dunno:

Because my blower fan only operates through my floor, center, and defrost. vents, when I crank that puppy on it's like being inside a F5 tornado. If I set it to the center vents only it's like I have an electric leaf blower motor in there. I believe a small electromagnetic pulse is set off simultaneously causing interference with near-by electrical devices.

Could it be possible that your fan maybe has some fried windings in its armature or maybe a half-fried commutator? I'll check with the Crawler Truck tonight to see if it also blows ya away like the motor in my 1981.

Also my heater works exceptionally well, nearly burns my toe nails off clean through my work boots.

Regards,
BigMike

Mine didn't work well at the beginning of winter a couple years back. It worked a whole lot better after I cleaned the mouse nest out of the box the heater core sets in.  :gap:
Both my 85 & the 90 4runners will blow air like crazy on high.

Ok I just checked the fan in the Crawler Truck and it is definitely not as good as mine, however, it routes air through both side vents whereas my fan only routes air through the center vents. So there is less restriction/passages for my system to blast some air at ya.

One thing I remember when we took apart Bevin's dash during his 3RZ-FE swap was that he had male air ducts entering into female couplers that had a sort of felt material to maintain an air-tight fit. Well most of his felt material had flaked off and was missing, and with his fan turned on, you'd get a ton of air coming out of the joints of his air ducts. That is all wasted pressure that would otherwise be enjoyed by the cold occupants.

BigMike

I of course have had everything apart when I did the motor swap. It is possible I didn't get something connected. I usually run all defrost, and I don't have any of the stock heater duct controls left. But regardless the fan just doesn't seem to blow. I knew I should have grabbed the whole Taco dash when I got the motor, wiring and column. Looks like its time to soup up the fan to match the RZ motor. Hmmm..... heater fan cams and a header?????
OK just ordered a Tacoma motor/fan, let the swap begin!!!!!!!!!!

When I replaced my blower, it was a parts house motor.  And the first way I wired it up, it hardly blew at all.  So, I switched the wires, and it was blasting crap out of the vents all over the dash.

It plugged right in so I didn't screw with it, but I did notice the the Tacoma switch is a 4psd and stock was 3.
Remember I have all the Tacoma wiring and the Tacoma fan switch, now I'll have the motor and resistor that matches the wiring.

When I did my motor swap I had the duct out of the 4runner so I used a resistor from a 3rd gen instead of the correct replacement. The late model resistor are covered in ceramic which keep them from burning out. It was a bit challenging to mount but in the end it turned out good. I'll try to dig up some pics.

Did you seriuosly ask me that? A 2RZ, A340F and dual cases fit so this should be simple. Stock sucks, oh it will fit, IT Will fit.
Back to the question, I have no idea but it ddin't matter in the grand scheme of things. I'll be sure to take pics and post up pics cuz I'm just that kind of guy.

when rebuilding my truck after the wreck I found my heater core was so badly plugged up a Stihl leaf blower wouldnt have pushed a breeze through it.  now it does a MUCH better job.

This is the problem with my MR2.

Look what a bunch of "Dirty Mike and the Boys" squirrels did to my trunk,

...and this is what they did to the recirculate screen right in front of my blower fan :tantrum:

They chewed their way right in and then made love hotels right at my fan and heater core. I blew so much sticks and leaves and mouse poo out of there it was horrible. It is still not 100% and I'll need to rip into the entire dash to really clean it out. If my fan isn't on "high" then I don't feel much...

Robb, yep freezing, it's bad when you hope for 30° weather and think it's warm.
The fan showed up Thursday as soon as the resistor get here I'll tackle the project and do pics for comparison. I had my core out and flushed it during the swap, no issues there.

I would be curious to soup up my fan too.  I need to throw in my heated seat inserts too...that will probably happen this summer along with my heated mirror project

The right resistor for the switch helps huge it blows now, I like it. I just plugged it in and now have to cut a bigger hole for it. After that I'll try the motor/fan swap.
