Deliberately ran my 22R powered '84 Xcab out of fuel just to find out how much it would hold. From completely M-T I can put 17 gallons in it.

Mine was 2 needles above E and took 10 gallons, so I think I have one of the smaller tanks.

My 85 fuel gage only goes up to 7/8 and then drops way below E.  This problem happened once before in the past after a Moab trip and then it seemed to reset itself.  After my last trip to Moab it happened again and won't reset.  Anyone heard of this happening or have any idea what the problem is?  I think the angles and dangles do something to it.  I have an extended cab and I think it is 16+ gallons.

I know the 92 3.0 4runner has a 17.2 gallon tank, and I assume the pickup is about the same, roughly 17gallons

My gauge drops to empty within the first 90 miles. I know it's the sender, but it's not a high priority to fix it. Sounds like yours might have a short or open in the sender wire.
