front leaf springs to short? need help
« on: May 30, 2013, 07:35:25 PM »
I started the SAS on my 89 pickup and it looks like the leaf springs are to short. To get the shackles at a good angle it moves the leaf springs back and it puts the crossmember in the wrong spot

:) nothing worth wheeling other than a YOTA :)

when i did my swap i hung my front hanger 3/4 of and inch forwad.  without the weight of the truck sitting on the axle my shackles were hanging 30 to 40 degrees forward. once you put the weight of the truck on the springs they should bend out and push the shackles back into a good position....also what kind of springs do u got did you get? a kit? what year of truck?...if your trying to use an older spring like an 84 or 85 dont hold me to this but im pretty sure they 42 inches hole to hole any anything you buy today is 48 from hole to hole pretty sure but not positive so if im wrong correct me....id measure what your springs are from hole to hole put some more measurement info up might be able to help you more then

But when you extentt or drop one side, it can invert the shackle

Boomerang or banana shackles don't do anything but clear mounts. The lead spring zoesnt care if it's a straight peice of metal, or a z connecting it. All that matters is point to point in a straight line

Hum, they can prevent inverted shackles too, and they are more then just about clearing mounts

Here's an idea:

Providing there's no clearance issue, is it possible to run a boomerang shackle on one side of the leaf, and on the other side of the same leaf, just a flat plate? ;)

If so what will happen ;)

to be honest ive never had an inverted shackle and when my rig is fully flexed my shackle hangs forward when the spring compreses it always come back to home....like i said before get some measurements up its easier to troubleshoot when we know where everything sits

I planed on fixing the mount when I got the welder out. When I had this lift on my other truck I had the crossmember where it should and my shackles were 90° to the frame but my steering didn't look right

how would you get the two opposing plates even close to being able to put the bolt through?

OP: what springs are those? they look like short no name superlift or something 79-85 springs..

x2 on fixing that motor mount

If both the center hole distance is the same (like 6") the bolt will go through and the shackle will work the same as any shackle.

It doesn't matter the shape of the shackle. The spring is in a fixed location set by the hanger. The shackle just allows the sprin to extend. Doesn't matter if it's straight, a L, a z or a J, the shackle works the same

How do you know you have a bad shackle angle? You do not have an engine in there, no weight up front. Put the engine and tranny back in, then see what it looks like.
