very loud engine noise
« on: Mar 03, 2013, 05:27:36 PM »
:help: Please I have an 81 22r I just fired it up for the first time today after a long fight of finding missing parts and trying to finish what someone else started. After starting, it has a very loud tapping noise coming from what sounds like the top end I have adjusted the valves cold and hot all seems to be good but yet no change please help if anyone knows what this could be and how I can fix this. It does not sound like any rod knock I have ever heard before. The only way I can explain it is a really loud lifter tap. I am trying to get this rig done as I am going to take it to moab Utah for the Easter jeep safari please :help: :help:

Does it get worse under load, like when you put it in gear? Could just be an exhaust leak between the head and exhaust manifold. (I didn't watch the video, I'm on my phone.)

No I does not get worse it stays the same... It's way to loud to be an exhaust leak I think. It's deffanetly a metallic sound like something is hitting the valve train

Did you tighten the valve cover down to tight, loosen it up and see if it goes away.

Do 81's have the POS plastic timing chain guides?

If so, make sure they still exist........

81s have metal guides, they could be making a noise but it's not going to be a tick. You'd be surprised at how an exhaust leak can sound metallic. I have one in my car and it sounds exactly like valves ticking, but it doesn't tick at idle.

It is super loud like there is something in the the valve cover really pissed off and trying to get out. I put a new exhaust manifold gasket on before I started it as well

Your link goes to ATT mail not a vid. If you place you hand on the valve cover, can you 'feel' the noise.

i say check the timing chain.... that noise is crazy loud, even to a newb to the chain dilemma.... if nothing else take a long screw driver (or dowel or even a stick) put your ear up to the handle and start touching it to the area thats loud... this can pinpoint rockers, chain, cylinders, bearings so on so on if done correctly...

good luck

Did ya check what oops talked about. I know this can be an issue. When the valve cover is very tight it will be pulled down just enough and the arms will hit the over.

When my old man got his 81, he tightened up the valve cover cause they were not super tight, then it knocked. Took it to toyota, and the valve cover was the issue

Wow that's odd I never knew the valve cover could do that... I have the same damn noise so I hope that's all I need to do as well but I do think it needs valves adjusted.... Are those easy to do yourself?
