loud noise front axle
« on: Dec 14, 2016, 09:43:18 AM »
While driving my 88 runner with rock assault axle 30 spline 5/29 gears 6 shooter knuckles hydo assist steering, I get this very loud snap in the axle area. It feels like the front of the truck is lifting up when the snap happens. I have inspected it many times adjusted the leaf springs replaced the axles, rebuilt the wheel lockers etc. I have tried about everything and I can't find where the loud violent snap is coming from! has anyone ever had this happen to their truck?

Can you do something like taking off from a stop, or turning left or right to get noise to happen. Or, is it always random?

Honestly this sounds like the classic Detroit locker "bang" that happens most of the time when first starting out. What rear locker are you running?  When it happens you can feel the rear axle "walk" a bit when it locks and then when it releases you'll feel it in the steering and it can sound like an axle broke.
