first engine rebuild. need some advice.
« on: Jan 01, 2013, 02:26:23 PM »
Ok... so i am rebuilding my engine. This is my first time. My question is this... all the parts that came off the engine, like the manifold, throttle body, plenum, etc.... are filthy. The inside is coated with carbon. I really want this thing to look really good. Is it ok to put these parts in a parts cleaner and really get them looking new? Is there anything ishould just leave alone? I did search before i asked this noobe question. Thanks in advance for the help. Oh in case you need to know... it is an 85 four runner. 22re.

Personally I would take all the parts, block, head, manifolds and plenum to an automotive machine shop and have them hot tanked. That way all the oil passeges and water jackets get cleaned as well. As far as the TB, buy a spray can of TB cleaner and do that yourself.

Thanks! Yeah i was already planning on taking the block in for work. Depending on cost either have the head gone through or just buy a new one from engnbldr. So its ok to have all parts tanked? Thats what i needed to know.

I also vote for hot tanking. It took 3 days of soaking in purple power and scrubbing to get my intake manifold clean

I heard some oven cleaner works wonders but don't leave it on there too long

It all really depends on your wallet and what your time is worth to you. If you can afford a little extra $ the machine shop is the best way ( hot tanked, ect. ) and not that expensive  :twocents: compared to be able to get right to work with cleaned and prepared parts.

In for another vote on hot tanking. I had all my stuff hot tanked when I built mine. Cleans everything up real well. My block and head were coated in 25 years of grease and oil and they came out looking like brand new

Just make sure to take all your sensors off anything you get tanked so they don't get damaged.

Its already built. Got all the good stuff. All pro lift, 529's lockers, longs, marlin cases,  sliders, axles, ram assist. Etc... the last thing i havnt attended to was the engine. It still worked but a compression test revealed that it needed some work. While I am at it might as well go all out. I got six months until wheeling season. This aint no show rig. Thats for sure.
