Are the truss's prefab'd, or are you making them yourselves?  Cause most pre-fab'd ones come on a truck with a boom.

having to make them ourselves.  Had I had a brain I would have just ordered prefabbed ones when my sister first got her cash in hand

Jake is going to fabricate a "hoist" on the front of my truck that will act as a cross between a crain and a forklift,. it will work off a atv winch he has but at least its a plan all it will cost is time and welding rods.

what I need right now is labor. strong muscles that  can work longer than ten minutes without having to sit or lie down on the dang slab :thud:

Your daughter should know some young dumb guys, that will work for sammies, and beverages.  If they are over 21, even better, cause they really like beer.   :yesnod:

I had to have 10 ft walls because secondary structures (i.e. a garage) are limited to being under 15'.   With a roof I come out at 14' 8"

How high with a roof?

as high as I want but the current plan is 14 feet,  slightly over 3/12 pitch.

14' sounds too low with 3/12 on a 30 ft section..........    3.75/15 = 3/12

That would be 3.75 + 12 + rafter thickness + roof thickness.......  That makes it at least 16'............

that mean 16 foot :wall:

We don't waste anything if it's possible to recycle it. Every scrap of board that can be used is being used...small fist-sized pieces thrown into a barrel and saved for the Rocket Mass Heater.

Having asked locals for any unused building materials, i've gotten quite a few windows, some exterior doors, some patio glass, and alot of perfectly good wood that was being used as erosion control landfill. We lucked into dismantling offices inside a lightly-burned warehouse-style building, and from that got a huge pile of 6" and 3.5" thick fiberglass insulation, two sheets of glass 3'x6', and 9 or so interior doors...one heavy steel office door. A quantity of 7' 2x4's from the office walls, a few outlets and electrical boxes, 3 toilets and sinks from the bathrooms.      So we are salvaging whatever we can, wherever we can.

Currently taking a break on Sunday after carrying all those rafters up a ladder yesterday. My Harbor Freight 2000-lb ATV winch had rusted inside...the magnets came off and went into the rotor, so we couldn't use it to build a hoist. I'll buy another and just remember to not let it get wet for an extended period.I didn't think i'd be able to carry a 30-ft rafter up a ladder but it was Just possible. Cody and Dustin helped but i was the one carrying them up...Arrgh! Fairly well sunburned but didn't pull/ twist any muscles...any more than they already were anyway.

Getting older sucks...i remember being able to do so much more with alot less pain when i was younger. Glen tries to help Way more than he should, with his back messed up as bad as it is. He's in pain as soon as he wakes in the morning, and has to take pain pills all day just to help out. We tell him to take it easy all the time, but he hates not being able to work as hard as everyone else.

This is probably the first time i've logged Glen out of the forum and logged in under my own account since I moved to Arkansas. I've seen people posting stuff like "depending on your code requirements" and not been able to easily post a reply. Illinois is hell with all the building inspectors, revenue officers (cops) handing out tickets like the county thinks money is easy to come by...for someone taxing people to death i guess it is.

But down here in free Arkansas i've been driving around without a front bumper (or license plate light) for months without so much as a glance from a peace officer. My plates cost $27 here...Illinois just raised the renewal price to $101. Here you will drive by a perfectly manicured lawn with a rich-looking house and the next lot has 6 rusty cars, 9 dogs, and a moldy trailer house with old washers and piles of lumber in the front yard. If we want to make the shop walls 18-ft high we just go ahead and do it, no code BS to deal with.

I've come home.

just for those code police out there, I have J bolts in the concrete every 3 feet, hurricane ties on either side of said j bolt up tied into the studs and hurricane ties on all the trusses and about half have them on both sides(of the truss) and of course each end.
I also plan to use some plumbers tape on the studs to the top plate.

Looking good.  I wish I was building a garage for myself.  Your garage is going to be nicer than my house.

I'll post a pic tomorrow.  You'll laugh!

Corected: I looks like i was drunk posting.  Bad gramar and spilling.

11 inches of insulation so it doesnt take an a/c unit as big as a house to keep it cool.   planning on about 15 inches of insulation in the attic.

What are you're temperature extremes (low in winter, high in summer) that you need that much insulation?
