GM Alternator swap
« on: Nov 14, 2012, 02:37:30 AM »
After a solid 6 years on the my trucks last toyota Alternator I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the more powerful and reliable GM style.
After poking around reading multiple threads I ordered a TG GM to Toy bracket and a JEGS 100amp single wire GM style alt. To clarify why I went with JEGs is simple... I wanted to eliminate unnecessary wiring (same reason I have a weber carb and a EFi setup on the self) and JEGs designed their alternators to ignite at 880RPMs! And lastly it only costs $90!

Both came in today and ill be making the swap Friday. Any tips, tricks, or input before then would be greatly appreciated!

I did the swap on my California smog 1st gen runner with a CS144 off of a Caddy. There is enough space to install the larger body alternator but barely. Be patient!! The only issue I had with the TG kit was that I had to enlarge the top curved adjustment slot to fit the larger diameter alternator bolt. There was also very little space between the alternator and the steering shaft. I think that my alternator rubs a little on the shaft but the shaft does have some flex in it. It took me about three trips to CarQuest to find the correct size vbelt to run the alternator with no slip and squeel. I searched the interweb and found a guy that did a really good writeup and pics about how he did the same swap on an engine that was already out of the rig. Good luck!

@nspohnholtz, Can you help me? I am interested in doing this same modification.

I have a 1981 toyota 4x4. Do I need V-belt or Serpentine Belt style?

Can you give me a link to the TG kit?

thanks,
