Vacuum pump for alternator swap.
« on: Jan 11, 2009, 05:21:36 AM »
I have a 2.4L "2L" Toyota diesel. i have added so many electrical accessories that I am at the very limit of my 60 amp Denso alternator. My alternator has a built in vacuum pump to create vacuum for my brakebooster. Iīm pretty sure the GM CS-130 and CS-130D donīt have a vacuum pump so I need to fix that issue.

Most pumps I find are for big V8s with radical cams to help them maintain vacuum. I need a pump to create and hold vacuum for my brakes.

Does anyone know a pump that can be found at scrapyards, can run for a while and is reliable?

Should I just modify a small tire inflator into a vacuum pump?

The truck has a vacuum canister so the pump doesn't need to be on constantly.

Iīm just thinking about making this clean and compact, and cheap without being a cheapskate.

could you mount a belt driven vacuum pump. the first powerstroke diesels used them 1995 had it the napa part number is nvp641008 I think its about $100.00.

Add a second alternator?  Much easier to find than a pump.

Yeah I guess I could just gut the old alternator and use that as a vacuum pump.

Why gut the old one?

Run the old one + a new one.........

How would I wire the old externally regulated Denso and a single wire GM alt?

yes you use the old alternator as an vacum pump + a alternator.... then you get a second alternator and you ill have a 70 A + the second alternator ??? 70A  = 140 A  or thatīs what I am guessing   I donīt know exactly how the  regulators work but I am guessing they all just aim at keeping the batterys at a 12-14 V.
just fab up some brackeds and bolt the second alternator in there and see what happens.

and afterwards when you have tested it with all the offroad lamps winch and so on... let me know how it works so I can coppy it  :cheese:

damn I should had refreshed before I typed all that in...

I am guessing here but
wiring should be just the same as the stock one...

+ to the battery and so on...  you shouldnīt need to connect them in a line or something like that.

if this all works like I have it in my head. the second alternator, just helps the first one keep up with the voltage drain.  in normal street driving con titions they both would just be running on 50%.....

I guess Iīll end up doing it like that. Iīm just not to happy about the extra drag on the engine. The 2L isnīt exactly known for high power.

the second alt needs to have a heavy relay between it and the battery so you can disconnect it when normal driving with no accessories on. this is how i use mine

if both are running and no cut off relay they will both try to charge and over charge the system

i fabbed up my secondary alt using 20R smog pump bracket and  the rest was  "custom"

together i charge 100 amps,

second alt wont be charging  when disconnected therefore it wont be a extra drag on the engine when not being used

How about putting a switch on the 12V switched wire that turns the GM alternator on? Then I would just need to keep an eye on the volt meter and turn the second alt on when needed. Thats easier then putting a 120A relay on the charging wire. Or do I need to isolate the GM alt when not using it, so there is no current on it when not charging?

I doubt that both alternators would be set at the exact same voltage.

The alternator that is set higher will do all the work until there's enough load that the voltage drops......

The second alternator would see a higher voltage than its set point and would keep itself off until you get that voltage drop.
