3rz swap alternator issue.
« on: Feb 07, 2009, 04:15:26 PM »
I am swapping a 2002 3rz into my 87 pickup and i got it running and it runs good. But i used a stock 87 alternator with a 95 t100 pulley and stock 87 alternator harness so everythig just plugs in and now my charge light is on and my gauge is pegged at like 18volts. What would cause this and what is the solution?
Thanks

Was there a noticable difference in pulley diameter?

have you checked the voltage? the pully from the 3rz might not work with a 87(22re?) alt.

The pulley was the same size. I wanted to use the 87 alternator so everything is plug and play so i am not cutting up alternator harness to make one work. I talked to Roktoy and he did this same thing and i didnt have any issues. Its a brand new alternator from vatozone. Do you think the voltage regulator could have been bad out of the box?

Ding ding ding, I think you just found your problem   I'd take it out and have them bench test it if you don't have the ability to test it yourself at home.

Its official, Autozone parts are total junk. That crappy alternator was pegging my gauge and started melting the charge wire from my fuse box to the alternator. I went to go return it and they said their National network was down and couldn't do a refund or an exchange which i didn't really want. I ended up buying a alternator from Napa and its working fine. I wanted a Toyota alternator but all the dealerships in AZ had to order it and i couldn't wait 2 days. So i think i will order the factory Toyota alt and keep the napa for a trail spare. Thanks for everyone help.
