How To: Fiberglass

Ok, to start, I dont know how. My plans are to bob my 4 runner, and when I cut the shell, I want to be able to fiber glass it back together.

Is there anybody out there (like Mr. Willy) who can help with some instructions?

How do I begin, sand, filler, what do I use, is there a kit? Thanks

I'd say about 80 grit sandpaper and reson and some cross weve cloth.
put the two pices together and clamp'um frim.
then use tape to hold the cloth in place.
mix the reson with the harderner and brush on.
sand as needed about 5 hours latter.
and you can fill the small stuff with bondo after.

Yup, that sounds good. Just make sure you vee out the edges so you get a good build at the joint and use a mat not cloth. start out with small pieces in the bottom and build it up till its just starts to mound on top. Then grind it flush after it cures. If there is room on the under side you may want to overlap some to add strength.

Also, when you are mixing the resin, make only what you need, that dries fast when it is warm out side.
If you are doing it when it is colder (60-70) you should be ok and have pleanty of time.
For getting off the excess, if you have chunks, a wood rasp works great.

When you paint fiberglass do you need to use a special primer or just the standard stuff

Just a regular primer. Make sure you have sanded all the shiny spots and it's not sticky with resin first.

also use a good cleaner like MEK to get any dirt or oil from your hands off the area your applying the fiberglass to.  make sure you "clock" the cloth that is you want the weave to go in different directions.  wear some rubber gloves some of that resin can be pretty nasty the fumes kill brain  cells by the millions and I've seen somebody pass out before.  It was glass and resin used on airplanes so it was a little bit better stuff than you can find in an auto store.  another trick to make it a little less messy is you can lay your cloth down flat on a piece of clear drop cloth pour some resin on it lay down another drop cloth over the top and spread the resin with a squeegee then peel one side off and position it on your repair and peel off the other side
