tdi swap on the way...
« on: Sep 05, 2012, 10:02:23 PM »
My 2L was tired.  very tired and going 55 on the freeway with a tail wind on 31s was getting old.  So I bought an old 2wd 83 and parked the 4wd 84.  Pulled and sold the engine...
Looking for a 96-98 VW TDI engine.  Those have the most power and least amount of wiring.  Hopedfully I'll chip and build the tdi to get about 140 hp and 280lbs of torque.   Ill put an acme adapter in it.  Already got 38s for it and a second transfer case.  It is going to be well into next year by the time its on the road again but I thought I would add it to the diesel section.

Suzuki Samurai guys started doing this swap for a while, worked great but I think due to a lack of interest the adapter was discontinued, plus I think it took jumping through a bunch of gooberment hoops to get them legal. I think it is a great idea, keep us informed.

Ya the diesel title is worth its weight in gold.  Thats why I kept the truck.  The worst part is gonna be the wiring, which I hate. Its likely that I'll end up with a custom dash instead of trying to make the current wires and gauges work.

Well its been a busy few months but the idea and plan is still there...  Started a few mods on my wifes evo 9.  Got dynoed at 350whp, ran a 12.3 @112 mph a couple weeks ago.  Now got the garage cleaned up and the bottle filled.  Updates to come soon hopefully.  Getting the Wood stove hooked up on the garage for winter. ..
First comes rear 4 link from Ruff Stuff= Nov.
then comes flat bed.
Then comes engine.

I have a 1Z Tdi swap in my garage ready to go in my 4runner, just waiting for the 3.0 to blow;)
I've heard you can convert your title to diesel at te DMV with just a simple inspection. Not sure what the rules are though, Has anyone tried it here in Ca??

I changed my mind completely and Im going with a 4bt... I started a thread in the project section called the smokey torque monster.  I didn't want to do any wiring that the higher hp tdis required.  4bts are heavy, but full widths and frame plating should help with that... Sorry to change my plans.  Prolly should delete this thread.

Ok so what are the tq/hp specs of the 4bt and what did the come in? Id like to do the tdi but it would take a lot of upgrades to make enough power to match say a 3.4 swap so if i can find a turbo diesel with bigger numbers that has better availability on parts that would be cool...

A stock 4bt with the right tranny will walk a 3.4.  IMO.  120hp, 390lbs of torque.  A fuel plate, some pump adjustments, on stock turbo get you over 150 hp and 475lbs of torque.  Too much for yota axles.  And you will need a tranny and tcase that will hold up.  It ends up being a big project.  Im going to run a zf5 ford manual tranny and most likely an atlas.  You can run an NV4500, or a dodge 47re auto.  You only have 3000k rpms to play with so you have to choose your gears and tranny wisely.

Ya Its not the most practical.  But when its done it will be one of a kind.  TDI's are awsome, I just didn't want to mess with the wiring. The older ones with less wiring just don't have the power to justify the swap.  IMO.

Or you can have the tdi pump converted to TdiM which eliminates the ecu and wiring...

Everything I'm reading is saying the wiring on the TDI's isn't that bad. I'm currently mid swap with my ALH TDI into 4runner.

I did a 1KZ-te swap in mine and the wiring was a pain! I would estimate that 70% of the two years it took me to install it were spent on wiring.

Wow thats impressive.  if I start projects I hate like that I have wiring nightmares when I to go sleep.  Hahah.  4bt.  one wire.  i can handle that.
How much power do you think your 1kz is putting to the wheel?

Yeah I was having wiring nightmares for awhile there. I am so glad they are over. I would guess that it is somewhere around 150Hp and about 250 ft/lbs as measured from the butt dyno. It is currently getting about 25mpg but I have room for improvement with gearing and an intercooler.

sub'd.  Very interesting.  The only VW transplant I've seen was on Ian from Extreme 4x on Powerblock. Into a Sammi with vege oil.  Luckily the county here has no idea about anything.  We can swap motors and can build one truck out of three.  They know nothing.  No VIN checks, no smog.

in regards to 1KZ-TE wiring you can modify the injector pump  to get rid of the ECU because in 1993 to 1996 the engine was available in Europe with mechanical injection  so the engine was designated  1KZ-T  then the only wires you need is for tacho pickup and fuel shutoff solenoid on the pump  in july last I replaced  my 2.8 turboed diesel with a 1KZ-TE  which I took the electronic controlled pump off and got the 2.8 pump overhauled and changed to become a 1KZ-T pump  the most expensive bit being the distributive head ( the steel end which the 4 injector pipes come out off )   which cost $900
own a 1989  LN106r diesel with a 1KZ-T 3 litre turbo diesel  bolted to a imported R151F gearbox with snorkel Rancho springs & shocks & Detroit lockers F & R & 11x 32  cooper sst ultimate dual transfer cases 130 litre fuel tank   full floating disc brake rear end

The 1KZTE are 97kw and 285 Nm and the 1KZT is about 93kw but Toyota only ran them with a auto or R series transmission so  the must a
have though that the G series wasn't up to it
