Dual cases popping out of gear
« on: Oct 03, 2011, 11:43:54 PM »
I need some help trouble shooting my duals. When I have the crawl box in hi, and the back case in 4 low the crawl box will pop out of hi into neutral randomly. I never have this problem when in low/low at all , only when i get into hi/low.   Also when I go to put the back case into 2wd  the shifter binds up and I have to push it pretty hard to get it to pop in, it does the same thing when going into 4 low( I have tried with the crawlbox in high/low/ and neutral but it still does it no matter what).

I have drained the oil and it looked good with no metal shavings, and I have been told to check the detent springs because I might need hd ones.

I have the same problem but only when the crawl box is in low, then it'll pop into neutral under compression or on the flat, whether my rear case is in low or high doesn't matter

I just went through that exact same thing, replace your detent balls, and up grade to the HD springs. It will cost you like 5 bucks.

I take it there's no way around it, the cases have to be pulled? Iirc I need 2 springs for the back case and 1 for the crawl box?

Why is your crawl box in the front? You are putting so much torque through the shaft, suprised all of you have not have not blown bearings or snapped shafts. The shaft is torquing so much it is putting pressure for and aft on the shaft and moving the shift forks and thats why you are popping out of gear. Crawl box always goes in back!! HD detents are just a band aid and don't fix the actual problem.
I've got the most liftedest truck in town, that little jap truck done stand no chance gainst my Chevy. My Chevy gots a V8 more lift an bigger tires, and an exhaust system, whats yer tuna can got, a V4, and them tires look like they is offa Saturn Corulla. The dealer instulled my lift, so ya no its done right, you just try to foller me throo them rocks an see what a reel truck can do.

You know a crawl box is just the reduction housing for our transfer case right?

Ok i'll do that, and my buddy was telling me to use a magnet to get the detent balls.

So how exactly is the crawlbox going to work on the back? Since it is just a reduction unit it has no outputs, so basically it would just be in back free spinning with no drive or reduction.

Yea a really small magnet, about the size of a pencil in diameter. I just got marlins HD springs and no more popping out.

How worth it would you say twin sticks are?  I'm trying to stay cheap on this but might end up doing a little upgrading with twin stick, and 30 spline outputs.

Well the only reason I have twin-sticks is because I won them at a Round-up years ago and the only time I use them is to put the rig on the trailer. So I don't think they are worth the price. But it does make shifting the rear case easier...

I like having my twin sticks because you can have 2wd low so that you can steer better (if you have a locker in the front like I do) in the sections where 4wd isn't really needed and you still get to have the low range power.
