4.56 vs 4.88

My truck is on 31x10.50s right meow on stock suspension. I'm going with a blazeland LT kit  in a few months.

I plan on getting 33x10.50s.... should i get 4.88s or 4.56?

85% is driving around town. I can hold 70 in 5th with minimal issues on the flat... i feel like 4.88 will make the rpms to high with 4.88s?

Go with 5.29s for anything 33" and above, and never look back.

General rule of thumb for the 5-spd is;
28's-4.10's
31's-4.56's
33's-4.88's
35's or bigger 5.29's
For auto's it is one gear set higher then the 5-spd up to 35's.

If your truck is set-up on the heavy side, you carry a lot of weight from time to time, tow a trailer, or envision going to 35's at some point in the future, go with 5.29's.  Also, since you do most of your driving around town, the higher gearing should help with your city mpg's, and shouldn't hurt your highway mpg's at 70mph enough to even notice it.

I run 4.88s and 33x10.50s, I DD the truck 55+ miles a day a do mostly highway 65-75 mph and feel like Im burning to high in the RPMs and would almost be more comfortable with a 4.56. but when I go off road it sure is nice to have that lil bit extra low end for climbing... it all really depends on what you do with the truck

lower than stock t case reduction makes up for having higher gears for the road. I completely agree about the rpm's being to high with the average setup. I looked at the math and compared the different gear ratios and tire sizes and went with 4.88's with my 35's. I think most people praise the lower gear sets is because there motor is old and worn out or not running right. My 22re with 4.10's doesn't have a problem getting up and maintaing speed with the 35's. it just lacks in the hill's and/or a full bed load of gear. Hopefully in a month or so i'll have my truck driving again with the new 4.88's.

to show reference to what im saying with lower than stock t case reduction
4.88's has a 100:1 crawl ratio with stock geared duals
4.56's has a 93:1 crawl ratio with stock geared duals
i doubt you will notice a difference in double low or with a 4.7 t case.

now going down the freeway at 75 with 33's
4.88 turns 3168
4.56 turns 2960

thats 200 rpms less on the freeway at 75pmh. the 22r series engines where designed to cruise between 2800-3200 based on seeing it come up numerous times on these boards, either gear set is between that but personally i'd rather be on the lower end. Also another thing i considered was shifting, the lower gear set will make you shift quicker while accelerating.

Your engine speed at 75mph is only 31 rpm's faster than it would be with the stock set up of 4.10's and 28" tires.  While 4.56 gears would drop your engine speed by 200rpm's at 75 and in theory would increase highway fuel mileage, any gains would more than likely be offset to the negative from city driving, since you would now be 7% under geared.  If you are concerned with highway mileage, droping from 75 to 70 would drop your engine speed by anout 200rpms, the same amount as the 4.56's would, and wouldn't have any effect on non-highway or trail fuel economy.
