the v6 uses a different tranny than the 4cyl

that's right v6 has a R-150, and the 4cyl has W-56,

ALTHO, the 4cyl Turbo has an R-151F witch is similar to the R-150, but with a lower first gear. 4.31 as compared to the V6's 3.83, and the 4cyl's W-56 at 3.93
the tail housing is also different as the R-151F bolts up to a RF1A gear drive transfercase, same as the W-56 but the R-151F is 23 spline output and the W is 21spline.
the R-150 found in the V-6 bolts up to the chain drive case

depends on what your plans are for it..... you could swap in a 22RE and put in a W56... or you could swap in a 3.0 again and go with an R series tranny....

most will tell you that the 3.0's aren't very good engines... i'd agree..

problem is the 2nd gen is pretty heavy and that 22RE would probably be fighting to keep up.. whats your budget?   you could also go for the popular 3RZ swap.

plenty of power and aftermarket support.
