One of my favorite little campers, if I were to get one I was thinking to put at least a 4.3 conversion w/auto. I think it would make a great tow vehicle at that point, flat-towing of course with an upgrade on the braking system too.

Yeah i have considered a 3.4 a few times for a future swap but everytime i think about it i just think well... there are so few of them i would hate to change the "all original" thing it has going on but its far from a nice rig i think i need to just suck it up and do it some day.. first thing is first.. i would strip it completely down to frame and sand blast and rhino line.. and go from there.. it was in reeds port oregon when i got it and talk about a rain forest environment.. so yeah it has a ton of issues but i just need to get financially set before i tear into her..

4.3 is easier, though I understand wanting to stick with Toyota.

Yeah.. Thats kinda my thing.. I like to keep a toyota a toyota.. Its just the way i have always been. I dont know much about Mercedes diesels but i heard its super easy to put a Mercedes straight diesel  motor in and you get a ton more power you just have to buy the adapter for the tranny.. i wouldnt do it to her but just though it would be cool.

Hope

hello to other owners of said vehicle; i have one and live near upstate new york; i need advice please, if you'd be so kind; i am having trouble starting it since it sat awhile; however, i need to move it, a very short distance, like from two houses over to mine, and fast! it needs to be towed but i can't get a tow driver to do it because there is a little bit of a hill to use the driveway; can someone advise how to rent or buy, very cheap, a tow bar or hitch: what is the right type? how much should it cost? can i get a used one? where?
we hope to tow it ourselves, using our 2005 chevy suburban;
the other question, and very imporantly, is:  if the motor is not starting, will the breaks work anyway? and the steering?
thanx so very, very much; i really want to keep this; it was my father's, of blessed memory, and we did lots of offroading and camping in california deserts, adding much personality to its bumper w/new bumps and bangs; then i drove it across country;
pls respond ASAP, before my neighbor calls to have it towed away, G-d forbid

With these things becoming more popular to build/restore I think we should have a section of the forum dedicated to the 'Yoterhome".  It could have builds, tech and other sections related to restoring the camper portion. I have a buddy up here in MT that just got one and is planning a 3.4 swap and SAS on a 2WD frame.  These things are the next fresh thing for Toyota 4x4 expedition builds.

I want to put a little 2 inch lift on it o i can clear 33's up front. anyone know of a placei can get some stiffer springs. i dont want it too tipsy. i would be devastated to lay it on its side.

Old Man Emu (ARB's suspension brand) makes excellent 2-1/4" heavy duty lift springs. I have been running them on my 4Runner for a few years and love them. About $250 would get all four corners.
