ATTEN MARLIN W56 Tranny wierdness
« on: Feb 05, 2005, 01:48:09 PM »
Hey Marlin, Just got a 87 runner w/ 233,000 mi W56-B tranny that has a hard time going into 1st, It will do into 1st with a little clutch manipulation, when I do get it in 1st and shift to 2nd sometimes it has a hard time gettin in to gear...all other gears have no problem engaging..also sometimes when I put it in nuetral it makes a clunking noise like it's still kind-of in gear.  When it's in any gear it drives fine with no noise or any wierdness.  I have already changed the shifter bushings and drained the old oil out and replaced it with 80/90 GL-5.  It seemed to make a difference, but did not completly stop the problem.  I have been told that the clutch could be suspect, but it does not slip at all...  could you shed some light in this???  Thanks!!!
Yea huh??? Should I bring my f@#kin tools

Id suspect the pilot bearing.  They have a tendancy to go out and cause all sorts of issues such as youve described.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I think W/T has it. If the pilot bearing drags it keeps the input shaft turning and causing the syncros to work harder to stop the trans when sitting still. If you can shift it fine with the engine off I would check the pilot bearing.

I would agree on the pilot bearing. I just changed my Master clutch cylinder, slave cylinder and all hard lines. Started have the same problems you are having. So I change out the clutch and bearings No problem now everything working fine right now. I keep changing things out I'm going to have a new 4Runner. :smack:

I have the same problem getting my W56 into first, but only when its cold. I have no other problems getting the tranny into any other gear. Just first. As soon as it warms up, 1st gear is not a problem. What do you guys think? The clutch feels okay. Not 100%, but decent. I did a tranny flush not too long ago and poured the right amount of fluid into the tranny. What do you guys suggest?

What weight oil are you running in it?

wow this is an old thread, lol

how is the fluid level? as well..... i know that after i do a flush of any kind, the level is good fro awhile, but always has a way of settling to less a little later on....

75 90w

I have no way of checking the fluid level since the fill plug is completely stripped and will not come out. I guess I can take out the shifter again and fill it a little more.
