2.28 x 2.28 worth it???
« on: Aug 10, 2011, 10:02:53 PM »
Is it worth it or beneficial to go 2.28 x 2.28 dual transfer case. I have an extra case laying around thinking of putting it in good use.. 4.70 would be the best but $ is a factor. How effective would this setup? How slow?

Single case with 4.7 is almost the same as dauls with 2.28. However, you get the added benefit of a tad lower gearing with the duals and an additional 5 forward gears and 1 extra reverse.

Go duals!

If money is a concern for going dual stock cases VS. going 4.7's...weigh out the options. Don't forget to add in the cost of drivelines, possibly a cross member, transfer case mounts and speedo extension cable as well when going with the duals and any other little thing you might need for doing the dual conversion VS. just installing the 4.7's.  I'd hate to see you get into doing the duals and get cut short when it comes to doing the drivelines and your rig is still in pieces and undrivable while you wait for the funds to replenish because you hadn't figured on all the detailed parts. Definitely do you homework first before you tear it apart unless you can afford to do so.

On the other hand, going duals is nice because you end up with 2 different low ranges 2.28 and 2.28(x2...lower overall than 4.7 alone  :gap: ) and once you've completed the dual conversion there's no more work to be done down the road when you decide to go 4.7's other than installing the gears. In fact, with the dual conversion done there is no difference in the amount of work to install the 4.7's than if you had a single case because the 4.7's get installed in the rear case.

Edit:  :psss: forgot to mention the cost of the Crawl Box Adapter...sorry, it was late for me.  :disturbed:

I just did dual 2.28s. Absolutely love it. Used double low in the rocks and still had single low for the normal trail. Definitely would suggest it to anyone

I'm with TacoRunner stock duals are worth it since you will have the option of normal low and then putting both in low you will have crawlability. Just remember that you will have to mess with the driveshafts to fit them. Personally I'd go the easy/cheap route with a single 4.7 case.

I like my new word "crawlability"

X2 Yes its worth it. Your going to have more gears than you know what to do with. I want to do the same thing to my 4Runner. Just remember that the duel 2.28 x 4.70 set up is stronger due to Marlins stronger Total spline input gear on the 4.70s.

Ive been building my rig for the past six month in my garage and my buddy shop and still planning to get it where my mind is set, so time is not problem. Planning would be more important... Currently im running TG 5" SAS with new seals everything with new master kit, new 5.29, and new aussie up front, and chromoly dirty 30s minus the 13" long slip yoke DS from TG not install... The rear is pretty much the same with grizzly locker all on 38.5 ss tsl. Virgin rig havent seen trail yet. That TC sits there asking to be worked on. More than likely thanks you folks i wont have to wait for 4.7 gears and get my parts list ready... I personally didnt know how efftective 2.28x 2 would be helpful... Seems like i have a little more planning to do... Question, Tg no questions ask adapter or the man himself marlin adapters. I live in fresno so its easy to get to both loc....

IMO there is only one choice -- Marlin. I have been running Marlin T-cases since 99 with out a problem.

Another thing about duals is you can twin - stick the back and have all your lower gears in 2wd, great for fireroading!!!!!!

Dual 2.28's is definitaely worth it, and if the set-up isn't low enough, you can always drop in a 4.7 case down the road.  Dual cases should almost be your first upgrade, after installking body armor and larger tires.

Marlin should be your only choice.

Also makes it nicer when stuck in stop and go traffic, allows you to creep along rather than constantly on and off the clutch.

I went with a tg adapter, great directions and everything went together smoothly, but it whines/ rings. Doesn't effect the performance and I'm getting used to it, just warning you though. Supposedly it's something they all do
