98 transfer case crunched/questions
« on: Jul 13, 2011, 02:44:51 PM »
On a recent trip, I backed into a rock and knocked holes in the rear case on my transfer case.  I have a 98 Tacoma, V6, 5spd, rear locker, TRD, ADD, what else?  I doubt that this one is repairable, as a new/replacement rear case is likely to be as expensive as a take-out complete transfer case.

I have located a couple of possibilities, but do not know whether or not they can be adapted to my use.  Both are 5spd, an 02 and an 04.  The 04 is pushbutton, not sure on the 02.  Mine is J-shift.

Can the differences be dealt with by simply changing out the needed externals on my case and inserting them on the later case?  Maybe wishful thinking, but this seems like one way to go.

I am open to other ideas as well, not stuck on just this one.

Thanks,
Dale

Not sure if this might help, but if your case has a good straight output shaft & bearing, I'll buy it & you can put that towards another case.

im prety sure a push button would bolt right up. the push button just engages the motor on the t case...the lazy way instead of shifting. only problem would be youd have to figure out how to engage the front wheels.. unless you have manual locking hubs. would probably be really easy to figure out though.

of you just take the section of housing from one you buy and replace the pieces that got the holes in yours. that way everythings the same.
