Building My Axle Soon...
« on: Jul 06, 2011, 11:44:24 AM »
Going to be ordering some longfields soon along with his hub gears. My question is if I should order a new seal kit? The axle is near brand new, been sitting since 1985 and only has 26k miles on it, so I'm assuming the bearings should good but seals are shot, typical grease coming out of the bottom of the knuckles. Think I can get away with just ordering a knuckle service kit? (http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/knuckle-service-kit)

Or should I order the whole axle rebuild kit? (http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/front-axle-service-kit)

And whats the difference between the knuckle service kit and this? (http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/knuckle-gasket-seal-kit)

Also, is the alignment tool kit necessary? The truck will rarely see any on road action, and if it does no highway or extended use.

Thanks for the input guys!

i just ordered the alignment tool because i switched to 6 shooter knuckles and arms, but if you havent taken apart your axle the shims should be correct from the factory so i wouldnt worry about it. just keep the shims seperated.

i would get the front axle service kit: http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/front-axle-service-kit just to make sure you dont have to go tearing into the axle again because you find out a bearing is shot.

the knuckle service kit: http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/knuckle-service-kit is the same as above less wheel bearings.

and lastly the gasket kit http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/front-axle-parts/front-service-parts/service-front-hilux/knuckle-gasket-seal-kit has no wheel bearings or trunion bearings. it would be my last choice.

like i said before id get the front axle service kit just to make sure you dont have to tear into it again but if you cant afford it or for some reason dont want to spend the extra $80 go for the knuckle service kit.
